Almost Canada
He will go down as the best all around defenseman to ever play for the caps. I would vote yes on #74 in the rafters, but he is under appreciated for some reason
The 32Thoughts guys did their own lineups for the 4 Nations before the rosters were announced, and had David Amber on to do one too. All 3 of them picked Carly for team USA, but Amber a had a rant about how underrated JC74 is, said he has had a HOF career. Was nice to hear him get some respect from the Canadian media.

Then of course team USA passed him over.

Just like the mood in the room above, how spoilt are we now

Last year, we would have hoped to beat Buffalo, now we expect to beat Buffalo

This game seemed like it was never in doubt ... even when we were down 1, at 2-2 ... I was never worried, and the game was a bit of a snoozer tbh

We march on !
Somebody said something about playing down to the opponent today but I see a subtle difference that I think matters a lot.

In some of the powerhouse years they would come out, start slow, and then maybe take over on skill or otherwise lose. It wasn't "bad games" so much as just not taking the every day seriously. This year, outside of maybe two games, it's not been that they came out flat and didn't care, they've actually just had weird bad games or been contained by the other team.

We can say they played down because it was a close game but I didn't see a lack of effort, I saw a bunch of weird bounces and guys trying not to run into each other. Being out of sync is much better than being out of focus, and that's why they keep winning.

did anyone ask about sandin in the post game? Hope he’s okay

He’s at least the third best defenceman on the team.

2 squeakers in a row, but 2 pts is 2pts!

Miro had maybe his best game so far, kid needs to bury one and go on a bit of a heater

Our 3rd periods have been pretty much lights out excellent

Willy better be getting a Top 3 of the week NHL thingy for this week

Logan coming up big on odd man rushes again, love it

Signs we're running out of 5v5 steam, maybe it'll end up nice timing with OV coming back soon for a resurgence (despite the 8-0-1 run ;) )

I’ve said before that Ovechkin retiring will obviously be a huge shift on and off the ice, but when Carlson retires it might actually be the bigger adjustment team wise. We’ve gotten so used to having a guy back there logging 25+ minutes a night playing in all situations for the past 15 years or so, it’s almost easy to take it for granted, but that’s not something easily replaced.

Carbery did acknowledge in the post game that 5on5 goals are trying up.

I'm very impressed of Miro so far. That one pass he made to Dowd, I think, was phenomenal. Would love to see how he would do in the top 6.

Re: Carlson. I’d say he’s the best Capitals D-man (career). Pretty easily.

The best defenseman to ever play for the Capitals? That’s harder, and some could easily argue Langway or better yet, Scott Stevens.

Mark Tinordi, Kevin Hatcher, Larry Murphy were all terrific defenseman too. But weren’t truly “Capitals” for their careers (Hatcher was close).

Heck, even guys like Gonchar, Iafrate, Housley had very good careers.

I’d probably take Stevens.

Anyway … my 2 cents.

Looks like it's all downhill from here. Just wait until Ovi comes back. He's going to throw off the winning ways of this team and we'll be bottom feeders again.

Or

He'll come back and these close games won't even be close due to his offense.

So a 50/50 chance of the team improving, but only a 10% chance at that.

My late thoughts from Cap One:

- Miro's best game by far. I really like his chemistry on that bottom line and I wish Carbery would trust him out there late in games. Made a bunch of really nice defensive plays and he's so good on the walls.
- On a related note Eller looked horrible. The entire third line did but he was the biggest culprit IMO.
- McMichael seems to be fighting it a little. I'd like top line Raddysh experiment to come to an end soon.
- The entire defense was great but especially Carlson and Chychrun.

All in all I thought it was a fine game, kind of like against SJS -- definitely the better side and deserved to win but left enough out there that a better team than Buffalo probably could've stolen it. As others noted too I think there's a difference between just looking a bit off or out of sync like last night vs. not trying or lacking intensity.

Mike Green had a short peak but his was maybe the best I’ve seen from a Caps player

I mean, Mike Green at his best was just one of the more profoundly talented offensive players.

But yeah, I’d be inclined to say Carlson is going to be considered the greatest Capitals D-man when he retires, at least in competition with Langway. It does help when you were the number one defenseman on a cup winning team, putting up 20 points and logging almost 26 minutes a night on the run. He’s on the leader board for a lot of Caps stats. He’s one of the all time great players for the team, career isn’t over yet.

That is a lot to lose in one year. That is why I think we might sign JC74 to an additional year or two. He still looks good and plays a ton of minutes.

I would go Stevens as the best to ever play d for caps. And it was for a while. But he left. My vote for best all time Caps D-man is JC74 for sure. Slight edge over Langway and winning a Cup is big even if Rod saved the franchise.

Oh, I’m sure Carlson will sign for another year or two, I don’t see any reason for him to not still be a good player in a couple years, might just have to play a normal human amount of minutes.
