I will admit that I am infatuated with Zadina’s draft position but don’t know much about the player/play style.

Would any Wings fans/anyone who has seen Zadina play a lot care to share their scouting report on him?

What team is a good fit for him?

Take the Puljujarvi route: Go to Europe, have a strong season, get renewed interest from the NHL, sign a cheap show me deal.

I can't imagine anyone is willing to give you much more than a 2-way show-me deal.

The problem is, he didn't want to go to the AHL. That's part of why he's agreeing to terminate his contract with Detroit.

It'll either be 1-way to an NHL team or back to Europe.

the fact his contract was terminated it what I find interesting. a talking head said because he asked for a trade and was on waivers--this allowed both sides to agree to the termination--not sure if that is true or not. Usually termination means the guys heading to europe

Yup, which is why I said:

If contract not yet terminated:
Zadina 1.8-ish x 2 + Gettinger 700k+
= ballpark 2.5m
for
Trouba 2m retained = 6 per.

trouba has full nmc this yr, but then nmc->ntc, he likes DET, maybe he waives now for 1 of 2-3 teams incl Wings?

I'm predicting he signs with a team for $800kish and his contract includes a European Assignment Clause so he can go back home if at some point he clears waivers and gets sent to the AHL.

It's probably because no team wanted to take on his contract, and the Wings didn't want to have to retain, give up a sweetener or take back bad salary to furnish his request.

Seems like Zadina's goal is to avoid the AHL at all costs (literally), which is where he was likely destined for next season if he stayed on his contract.

I think it was the report that Zadina stated he wouldn't report to the AHL if assigned. That would trigger article 14.(b) of the SPC. By agreeing to terminate now rather than wait until September/October it allows Zadina and his agent to try and find a home for him during the summer.

14. The Club may also terminate this SPC upon written notice to the Player (but only after obtaining Waivers from all other Clubs) if the Player shall at any time:
(a) fail, refuse, or neglect to obey the Club's rules governing training and conduct of Players, if such failure, refusal or neglect should constitute a material breach of this SPC. 319 EXHIBIT 1
(b) fail, refuse or neglect to render his services hereunder or in any other manner materially breach this SPC.
In the event of termination under Paragraph 14(a) or (b) the Player shall only be entitled to compensation due to him to the earlier of the date such notice is personally delivered to him or the date such notice is e-mailed to him.

I'd be surprised if the Wings triggered this in some way. All signs seem to point to Zadina and his camp requesting the termination.

That's what I mean. Zadina was put on waivers and Detroit said he'd come to camp if he clears and either makes the team or heads to the AHL to work his way back up. Zadina let it be known he wouldn't report to the AHL. I'm sure Detroit responded that they'd be forced to suspend the contract in that case. To which I'm assuming Zadina suggested to just terminate now and give his management time to find a team for him.

Walking away from a 2 year contract is a very strange move. I honestly am not seeing what Filip is seeing. I get he doesn't want AHL but he won't come close to that money in Europe. Only thought is KHL? Which would be surprising. .no NHL team will give him anything close to his current contract.

A year ago i was so excited to cheer on Detroit with Hronek, Vrana, zadina and Kubalik.lol

It seems triggered by Zadina wanting to be gifted a roster spot despite doing nothing to earn it. He hasn't proven anything at the NHL level.

I'd be surprised if they even got that far, Zadina and his camp don't need to be told he'd get suspended without pay if he refused to go to GR. I'm guessing Yzerman had already given Zadina's agent permission to talk to other teams where they found a couple that would be interested if it weren't for his contract being a deal killer.

Why would the Rangers do this?
moot if contr already terminated, but to answer your question...

Rs want/need to go younger.
If not otherwise, for more cap flexibility.

After this season, there are many options to JT trade.
If he really likes DET -- supp only place he'd consider prior to signing here -- if it is clear he's going soon, he may agree to waive to come to DET.

Rs do this for cap, plain and simple.
Supposedly Z has chemistry w/Chytil, but I am not in favor of breaking up kid line.
Howev, if overpayment were on the table from, say, Flames, enuf to accept a deal, then could slide Z w/Chy as a fallback.
Howev, am prepared to phase out Zadina if, as likely is, necessary.

Money means different things to different people. Seems like he doesn't care about the money, he just wants to be in the NHL. So he takes a gamble and does a couple of 1 year league minimum deals to try to get his career back on track and make more money on the back end.
