Prospect Info: Filip Mesar

When I see someone describe Suzuki as being slow, I know I'm reading someone who unreliably watches and analyses hockey. He has long, powerful strides which makes him look slower than he is, but he's legitimately one of the fastest centers in the East. The edge stats back up the eye test.
He’s made tremendous progress in this department, but I find he still glides way too often for my liking. Wish he would push himself more and continue to push for that extra stride or two vs gliding, which he tends to do a little too often.

I liked his game. He makes things happen and is obviously working on becoming a consistent pro... I also understand why the coaches were timid about putting him in because he still has work to do on his decision making and play away from the puck. He still has some time. Let's hope he has a better year next year.

Sure looks like he will get traded to another team who is disappointed with one of their picks as we are of our pick in Mesar............that said he could run to Europe or the KHL also........
Unfortunately is doesn't look good here.

Very strange...........that draft was amazing for us, landing us Slaf, Beck and of course Hutson.......and then there was Mesar.
That’s what I thought the morning after the draft. The Habs’ selection puzzle presented a cool picture but Mesar was a piece that really didn’t appear to fit.

At one point along the trail of that draft, Mesar and Frank Nazar were ranked fairly close.

When Habs took Mesar, I recalled that and it triggered some hope. That hope began to fade with The Kitchener Experience.

As for Nazar, no comparison. Nazar looked damn good in Chicago’s late-season upset win at the Bell.

There's nothing to be disappointed about Mesar as of right now. You gotta see him on a first line in the AHL before you can pass judgement.

He got absolutely no looks on the first line this year, he was playing low minutes and a game that he was obviously not drafted for.

If next year he gets some ICE time on the first line and first PP and he doesn't produce then we can all be disappointed.

What i saw from yesterday's game was mostly positive, i saw a guy who was trying, who has studied the game without the puck but still needs work. Physically i saw some big improvements on how he used his body when he was fighting for the puck.

It looks like next year will be the big year for him.

Does he have a decent amount of trade value? I know Mailloux/Roy get brought up in trade scenarios, but I’ve wondered about Mesar.

He's probably got more value to us than in a trade, if anything he'd likely be a throw in like Collberg was to get us Vanek before. Best to just hold onto him for another year or two to see if he starts to put things together.

He is a center, the last thing he should be doing is leading the attack up the ice. His job as a center is to provide support for the dmen in his own zone and as a passing option on the breakout which usually requires close support. He plays his position to near perfection and him taking off early would lead to a negative correlation between GF and GA. He also plays the most minutes of any forward and should not be out there tearing up the ice indiscriminately. Suzuki uses his speed when it is needed and the reason that he is successful is he knows where to be on the ice all times which is something that you can not do as a center if you are not controlling your pace and living in open pockets of ice and sliding into developing lanes. The key is being on time in those pockets/lanes as playing too slow or too fast are both detrimental to accomplishing these goals. One reason that Newhook sometimes struggles as a center can be largely due to not managing his pace well enough and being too far up ice and too close to defenders when he receives a pass or simply rushing the play and not seeing options that can spread out defenders and open lanes for wingers and trailers.

When Suzuki is slumping he does tend to glide too much and defer quickly but he really cut that out from his game early in the season and seems to really understand the balance in pace that allows him to handle the puck more and make defenders uncomfortable from the moment that he touches the puck. Suzuki plays with purpose and every move/touch has a purpose. Asking him to play faster is to expect him to be more reactionary than manipulative and i much prefer a Nick Suzuki that is in control than one who would be more at the mercy of his opponents.

Not much. Healthy scratch in the playoffs.

I didn’t watch much of him this year but I liked his game when he’s good. He’s a massive long shot at this point but who knows. Needs nothing short of a quantum leap to be relevant. Odds are against him at this point

He looks very much like he will be in Europe sooner than later but I am not entirely writing him off yet.
