Prospect Info: Joshua Roy Part 2

Roy's at the end of his D+4. By now he should be dominating the AHL given his potential as demonstrates for example at the start of his AHL career.

I suspect that he will bounce back but he won't sustain it -- like before.

His problem is between his ears as he does not seem to be buying in to the messaging from Montreal about playing with more pace and moving his feet. He will never be a strong skater and he has the IQ to overcome that but you really have to consider that he just may not have the internal drive to play in the NHL.

This is the reason that he originally fell in the draft and even though he did eventually turn it around, perhaps the challenge at the next level is just too much work and beyond the scope of commitment that he can consistently reach/maintain. He just looks too comfortable in the AHL and that is very disappointing considering the developmental curve that he had previously established.

In my opinion he has been passed up by Beck, Kapanen, Xhekaj, Davidson, Demidov. He will get qualified but he is not NHL quality. He falls in the Dumont, Hudon, ABB category.

One problem he’s facing is that we have one of the deepest group of prospects in the league. I think he’s NHL quality but I don’t know if he has a place here anymore.

There are some older teams out there that could probably use an injection of youth. We should look at dealing him. I’d hate to see him just waste away in the AHL.

I disagree.

Roy had a roster spot to start the season. Many people were penciling in Roy - Dach -Newhook as the second line twelve months ago and defending it. Roy did start on the third line, and then failed to show up.

Roy has a good roster spot with Laval these playoffs. His spot has not been taken away be Demidov or Hage or Laine or Heinemen or whomever from "one of the deepest group of prospects in the league". And he's just not showing up.

If Roy were the top forward prospect, he wouldn't be getting more ice time as he already gets a lot of ice time. He'd be getting less ice time, because he'd be getting zero ice time, because Laval would be eliminated.

Roy is a lot of things, but as far as we know he's not a victim, other than of himself.

I don’t disagree that he had a disappointing camp. But he was with Dach and Newhook… totally disfunctional line.

Both things can be true. Under different circumstances he’d probably get a shot. But we’ve got so many kids trying to knock down the door that it’s going to be tough for him to break the lineup.

I think he can be a good NHL player but I don’t see where he fits with us now.

If he gets his confidence back and realizes his window is closing I think he could maybe be a depth bottom 6 scoring winger, but not for us. Feels like that ship has sailed. Other organizations might be open to giving him a look. He might just simply be too slow for the NHL though.

I would have liked to see him traded while he still had some sort of value, maybe something like Newhook + Roy for Crouse + a later rounds draft pick.

He’s too slow, too soft, and doesn’t compete hard enough. This guy is done here. He probably ends up somewhere in Europe after his contract is up.

I rarely give up on players but I don’t believe in him at all anymore, he was completely invisible during his call ups, didn’t show anything that led me to believe he understood the opportunity given to him. Hope he proves me wrong, but I don’t see a scenario where he’s in the lineup on a consistent basis next year.

I still think Roy could make something of himself in the NHL, but yeah, his opportunity to do it is shrinking every year and he's been passed-over by a couple of Canadiens prospects already (Kapanen, Beck, Xhekaj, Hage, and probably whomever we draft this season).

Right now, Joshua Roy doesn't have enough strength, speed, pace of play, consistency, and compete level to "unlock his potential" at the NHL level.

funny when I kept saying Roy lacked strength I was told it's not a problem but clearly it is as the second opposing players get close to him he gets rid of the puck quickly cause he knows he stands a good chance of losing it when he's in open ice as he's easy to catch, easy to push off pucks and that has to change.

A lot of people speculate he has off ice issues, beyond the narrative that he was just lazy and that's why he fell to the 5th round

I'm starting to think it's true

Pretty sure it is. Can't believe the coaches aren't telling him to stop sleeping through shifts if he wants to get to the NHL. And nothing changes.

This is still his first pro season, no?

It's been rough... but everytime I see him he creates things. I hope we go on a long run and he gets some games in. I haven't lost hope.

I just hope he is working hard in practice. If not.... get rid of him!
Why? Roy doesn't work hard in games and they won't bench him.

No, what did they tell him?

If you don't know maybe you shouldn't dismiss HF posters so quickly, not that I blame anyone for dismissing HF posters but still it's the point that if people don't know things, why not ask questions. Instead HF is just mostly people saying other people are wrong.

I would have to look up the exact quote but they wanted him to work on his pace, clearly he hasn't been getting the message but then neither did Xhekaj when they sent him down last year as it was said they wanted him to focus on his defense and not going for the rough stuff, imo he didn't get the message but was still called up shortly after which is not a good way to send a message imo.

Oh my bad. I didn't mean to be dismissive. I agree that he needs to "work on his pace"... I just don't think it means he isn't working or trying hard. I think he needs to adjust how he plays. In any case this all came from the Mesar thread... I really didn't want to talk about Roy because I know I have a different take than most people here... which is totally fair. I undertsand he is a frustrating guy to watch play.

both Roy and Mesar can be very frustrating to watch, have been saying it since I started watching them, I didn't mean to point you out so much as I'm just so tired of every day anything I say there's always someone telling me I'm wrong, which isn't so much a problem but when people then tell you they didn't watch or clearly haven't seen as many games as me, I don't get why more people can't just ask questions instead of just telling someone they are wrong.

It's like every day most of the posters here come here with boxing gloves on when they should be bringing a note pad and pen. I've read just about everyone's posts on here over the years and I just don't get why so many are so confident that they are the ones that are right, I mean everyone will get it wrong when discussing prospects as the best scouts are wrong a lot but people just dismiss all the times a poster is right and just focus on a bad call and think well they were wrong on so and so, so I know I am right on this. No discussion, just you are wrong and i'm right, no you are wrong and i'm right, and that just goes on and on and on and on.
