Prospect Info: Filip Mesar

Yes but clearly Mesar was the start of the research point in which every drafted OHL forward from 1990-present was compared to. Someone having a similar season to him, in a worse situation mind you, doesn't mean his isn't among the worst. There's not a lot of Europeans drafted in the first round who moved to the OHL in their D+1 and most of the ones who did were more successful than Mesar. It's a niche scenario because most first round talents don't move to the OHL in their D+1; they're either already there or good enough to play in a European men's league.

But just to illustrate the point.

Stefan Ruzicka had a better D+1 after doing the same thing as Mesar, never became a full time NHLer.

Burakovsky wrecked the OHL after moving there in his D+1, became a marginal middle six winger.

There's very few examples to go on but it might add 5-6 players in total. From 2002-2019 those are the only two directly comparable players.

Sure. But Sale had a worse D1 in the OHL than Mesar. Both were first round picks from Europe who struggle in their NA transition to the OHL.

Your initial post seemed to suggest Mesar was some outlier that factually is not the case.

Also, Mesar has a better AHL ppg than Sale this season, so not sure how you landed on the notion that Sale has been better this year? I don't watch Coachella, so perhaps you've seen him play and his 200ft game has miraculously improved :dunno:

Sale wasn't drafted out of the OHL so he doesn't pop up. But he's also shit and having a better AHL season than Mesar despite being a 19 year old most of the year.

Pardon my czech but since when 21pts in 51 games is better than 18pts in 39?

Mesar has looked better lately. It’s hard to say if it’s him or Beck or a combination that’s affecting his production. Beck was more noticeable last night, so hopefully that means he’s finally waking up again.

Sale is younger and still OHL eligible; contextually he is having a better season. Contextually he also played in Barrie's middle six, and got traded to Kitchener, at the top of the standings, to play on their third line. They acquired him thinking they'd have him this year as well but Seattle nixed that idea. Sale only turned 20 a month ago and is one of the youngest full-time players in the AHL. Helenius is the only one younger I believe. He's 80th or so all time for 19 year old forwards. Mesar has yet to crack the top 1000 for 20 year olds.

Mesar was given the keys to the kingdom and complained his team mates weren't good enough to read his game, only for all of them to outscore him.

Even with that I don't think Sale is a good prospect and there's a reason he dropped to the 20s after being a consensus top 5 pick a year before the draft.

He essentially said his team mates couldn't keep up with his passes and he had to dumb down his game in the OHL. Go earlier into this thread it was a multi-page topic.

Mesar has dumbed down his game from his first years to now

3 slovak busts:D
Slaf's production is on par with my expectations, and Mesar was a late first, boom-or-bust type, but I'm surprised by how little Nemec is showing. I've seen him live in the AHL quite a few times, he never stood out for anything.

It's bound to happen when a group of players who play together have success. One is usually the straw the stirs the drink. Even half the 2019 super USA squad has had its fair share of busts.

?
Better AHL season at the same age (ie compared to Mesar last year, who only played 2 AHL games).

He's not, statistically speaking, having a better season this year than Mesar is.

Selective contextualization makes for a weak argument.

Kitchener -according to local fans- was an absolute dumpster fire in Mesar' D1 season.

Injuries have also affected his play each of his post draft seasons.

It's pretty safe to say he's hasn't developed or progressed well since the draft, but I'm not sure why anyone would need to exaggerate his struggles and discount the numerous obstacles he's encountered

Mesar was given the keys to the kingdom and complained his team mates weren't good enough to read his game, only for all of them to outscore him.

Case in point. That's a terrible exaggeration... Especially considering the player didn't even want to play in the OHL to begin with.

Even with that I don't think Sale is a good prospect and there's a reason he dropped to the 20s after being a consensus top 5 pick a year before the draft.

Indeed. Though I would argue that neither are advanced enough in their careers, nor have they "busted completely" -in so far as both have played/progressed well enough to play legitimate AHL roles, to suggest that they don't or no longer have NHL potential at this stage.

Both will have to show marked improvement to get there, but the NHL caliber talent that made them first round picks remains quite visible despite their uneven and disappointing progress

4 goals in 39 games? Even David Desharnais was an elite goal scorer in comparison. I dont see a place in the top 9 for him in the future and thats fine our team will be loaded. Another Andriguettho/Hudon/Fahrell... these player are just not nhl talent. Kulich was the pick..

I agree…..we may have made a mistake on this pick. Maybe they wanted Slaf to have a buddy.

koivu was never the biggest goal scorer, he was working hard and a passer

Mesar has something similar in him, hes always looking to feed his teammates first.

That pass he made to Beck before he got injured is a testimony of who he is as a player when used properly.

His last po in the ohl he was leading the league with 1 goal and 15 assists

Angrighetto was a scorer and Fahrell is a bum, you cant compare them with Mesar
