Fights with helmets on

Are fractured skulls worse than crushed windpipes ( ala mccleary)? Should we ban slapshots ?

No, but in much the same way that we have helmets to protect against cracked skulls, we have neckgaurds to protect against crushed windpipes. Are you done being intentionally obtuse now?

The neckguards are made of Kevlar, or some other soft material, and aren't going to completely absorb the impact of a puck. It is made so that a blade wouldn't cut the skin underneath it. If neckguards were made stiffier it would be cumbersome to wear.

EDIT : Not talking about goalies neckguards, ovbviously. Those are made of plastic and will absorb / deflect pucks. Still, a lot of goalies chose to not wear one.

Two players on each team should be granted helmet-less fighting freedom. **** it, throw a letter E on their jersey too (for enforcer). Then, if any of the non-Es want to dance, then they must do so with with their helmet and visor on. Yes I know it's a dumb idea, but its better than this new rule imo.

Grandfather in only existing NHL roster players; no one not an active NHL roster when the season begins cannot carry that designation.

For everyone else, fights immediately end when a helmet comes off, just like with a goalie's mask coming off.

And instead of penalties, the game should stop until they hug it out at center ice.

FCS. Tear away visors cant get here soon enough.

10 years from now fighting hockey will gone. It is clear at this point the NHL wants nothing to do with it. Players aren't going to fight opponents wearing helmets fitted with visors. Its the new NHL, its better to just come to terms with it. I will miss getting to see the occasional fight to be honest.

Me too, it just adds to the overall experience.

Tearaway visors would be outlawed immediately by the NHL if they were ever developed. The idea of a safety device being compromised in order to provide an advantage in fighting isn't going to be allowed at any level.

Keep in mind that the NHL has done all sorts of things to restrict the manner in which someone can get the upper hand in a fight. Tying down of jerseys became mandatory, both to prevent someone (Rob Ray) from stripping down but also to prevent jerseys from ending up over someone's head. Various adjustments to jerseys like elastic cuffs or tearaway sleeves have been banned. Skaters are no longer allowed to wear goalie cut jerseys.

The only modifications that are still allowed is additional fight straps being added, whether the actual snap-and-velcro style or a modified style like a skate lace. Even these are much rarer than they used to be.

I went to a Preds game the other night and I saw an game worn McGratten jersey for sale with a fight strap sewn in front and in back. that was a new one for me but it makes sense.
