This would be more feasible at junior level.
Perhaps a 4 game U20 series organized by USA Hockey and Russian Hockey Federation.
No need for the restrictive NHL or politicized IIHF to get involved.

Those players are all still subject to the IIHF if they want to play in IIHF events. It probably wouldn’t go this far but if they really felt compelled they could start banning players from the world juniors.

Not to mention the NHL would have quite a bit to say about drafted prospects playing in any tournament.

There isn’t really any way to avoid the NHL or IIHF, regardless of whether they’re officially involved or not.

Not to mention, on the off chance this does happen, where would they draw the officials from? NHL officials and IIHF officials wouldn't work the games. Hockey Canada and USA Hockey officials probably tell the teams to get bent. NCAA officials too. That leaves... KHL officials, I guess?

Next 4 nations should include Russia. One of Sweden / Finland should be relegated.

Both Sweden and Finland will not attend if they try and do a 5 nations before there is a peace treaty. So you go from 4 to 3. And as much as I want to see Russia (very badly want to), I also want to see what Finland can do with Heiskanen, and Sweden played three very close games at the 4 Nations. Really hard to argue that they don't belong there after they beat the US and went to OT vs Canada. Then there's a good chance that some American and Canadian players start announcing they won't play.

Would be similar to rugby teams playing South Africa in the 1980s, so it's not happening with NHL players that's for sure. Playing sports with Team Russia is taboo. Even if USA Hockey was given a directive to set this up, the NHL and the individual teams would not support it.

There's a lot of MAGA diehards among US players and execs. But I don't think enough to pull this off. Many would eagerly cheerlead it as long as Trump and Putin remain besties, but gradually you'll see some players announce that they won't take part, and I think by the time the event happens it will have the integrity of a Rudy Giuliani press conference at the Four Seasons.

The IIHF is not accepting Russia at its events, but it is not organizing a boycott of Russia or enforcing one. I think more likely the NHL will think ahead and realize how sketchy the idea is. I'm sure the league is very eager to have its Russian players play in NHL-international tournaments, they just can't do it until the war ends.

On no planet is any American or American team ever gonna be banned from the IIHF because of government actions, or where or who they play (Russia in this instance). Not happening.

But good point about NHL drafted prospects. That could certainly throw a wrench into things.

Should have been a 5 Nations cup. Problem solved.

Get f**king politics out of sport.
The problem with comments like this is it's difficult to say how dumb they are without breaking rules.

Specifically, I will not comment.

More generally, international sports are intrinsically political.

You are making events to compete under the banner of political entities.

They have been funded as a way to create national pride or prove which system is better. Completely political.

Bans and boycotts don't usually apply to professional athletes in pro leagues because they are about the sport and not politics.
