I think our ties are fine, unfortunately.

Why? It’s not going to be IIHF sanctioned and likely done in the off season. Will definitely get good TV ratings and ticket sales.

Bad optics.
I don't think the top players would care and you might get our "C" team at best.
Possibly ticks off Sweden and Finland.
Possibly puts our own Olympics participation at risk.
No benefit to the owners.

USA participation in this would be a slap to the face of the rest of the world, particularly athletic ruling bodies. Russia athletes have been consistently banned from participating in world competitions under the Russian flag, and for good reason. Purposefully setting up a summit featuring both would be incredibly bad optics for the NHL.

Would be similar to rugby teams playing South Africa in the 1980s, so it's not happening with NHL players that's for sure. Playing sports with Team Russia is taboo. Even if USA Hockey was given a directive to set this up, the NHL and the individual teams would not support it.
