Fenway Sports Group in crisis mode

What I meant is that FSG now owns 3 major team sports franchises and in the case of Liverpool and to a lesser extent the Red Sox they can't or won't spend what's required to keep up with the big boys, money ball worked for awhile with Liverpool but that no longer is the case. Furthermore last year Liverpool was 3rd in world football in total revenues earned yet they spend like they are a 10th place team in their own league. In other words they are very very frugal and they need to sell the team to owners who have ambition and actually care about the team.
They’re going to get the NBA expansion team in Vegas with LeBron too. Not exactly a well kept secret.

Pretty much- they are carpetbaggers who view these teams as investments. They’re not fans. If they’re winning games they’re not gonna go over the top with spending to win a few more. And they won’t buy talent unless their investment is starting to lose value

They’ll spend but only to an extent these days. I do think they’ll target Ohtani- but that’s because I think they view him as a safe investment (they’ll make that money back by penetrating the Japan market). Has nothing to do with improving the team, that’s just the side effect

I appreciate the 4 rings in baseball. It’s incredibly impressive that they’ve won so frequently with the Sox/ended an 86 yr drought and are still widely disliked in the area. Speaks to how out of touch they are with fans imo

Excellent post.

I actually hope they do as they need funds and hopefully they sell off Liverpool FC.

The Penguins' failure to make the playoffs for the first time since 2006 is another financial blow to FSG.

Like many NHL teams, they need home game playoff revenue to make a profit and Pittsburgh is a market that historically will not support losing hockey. AT&T Sportsnet will close at the end of the Pirates' season and it appears NESN ( yes our NESN ) will take over the coverage similar to the Rangers controlling TV rights of the Islanders, Devils and Sabres.

The crown jewel is Liverpool FC and they likely will not qualify for any of the big-money championships in Europe.

The Red Sox?

They needed a strong start to the season and so far

Still remember reporter talking to Mario about relocation & telling him the 2nd pick could be good to & he said nope we need that 1st pick .Bang they win lottery .:sarcasm:

I'm actively rooting against the Red Sox at this point, and they were my first favorite team as a kid. The way Bloom and FSG have managed this franchise the last several years is absolutely gross.

When does the NESN/Xfinity deal expire?
Last I heard (Christmas) negotiations weren't going well

I read that second word wrong.
:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Although I guess in the macho world of professional sports you kind of read it the right way!

What happened on the big night?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Was right there in front of me and I couldn't rise to the task.

Don't worry. It happens. Or so I hear.

Henry’s pens failing is hilarious
I know it would be all fantasy , but nothing would make me happier than to be sitting at a set of traffic lights and look over and see John Henry panhandling ............. What would the sign he is holding say ?............. Oh! I get it " I am a failed carpet bagger "........

Ironic that with all of the money pouring into the Premier League, Henry is now considered a poorvo. He'll still land on his feet when they sell the team and he clears a couple of billion over his investment. But I bet it kills him not to be the big fish in that pond any longer.

Hope they crash and burn. They deserve it with the way they have managed each team and the lack of respect shown to the fans

What are the sidewalks made of around PPG paints arena? Maybe Henry can chop some of it up and sell some "Sidewalk Legacy Blocks" to the fans.

Pretty mind numbing to think that in just a generation or two, what used to be playthings for the "rich and famous" were million dollar mansions in LA, red ferrarri's in the garage, and beachfront on the Hamptons...and how that has evolved in such a short time to billion dollar sports franchises. I guess it's the law of compounded interest... but it is just nuts that "entertainment value" has grown such that many of these teams are valued at $1B plus these days. Apparently $6B for the Redskins... Even more shocking is these people can't find better use of their billions...

I have nothing against sports as a business, but you have to wonder how far we have gone as a society to place this type of value on entertainment vs. creating real broad based opportunity or improvements (and no I am not a socialist....). ESPN middle school shouting matches with "Mad Dog and Stephen A Smith", talk radio garbage with people who know nothing but spite and fabricated controversy, the list goes on...

Sorry for the soap box rant. Not trying to come across as an anti-anything. Just knowing a bit of the LBO crowd having has dealings with KKR and Platinum Equity in the day, and the midset of the likes of JH and his minions it just irks me that they don't create any value at all in their business dealings unless it is for themselves. Billions of dollars of employed capital and no new product, service, innovation, nor positive outcome aside more $10 beers and nosebleed seats to provide a family of 4 $600+ worth of "memories" from a 3 hour game. Think about it, a mom and pop shop needs about 30K of working capital to maintain stock and cover monthly payroll. For the price of an NHL franchise that's 200,000 mom and pop shops around the country. A million people with new opportunities...

As for the Pens, good riddance and may Fenways Sports get fu**ed on their investment and burn cash until the cows come home! Here's hoping JH get's stupid and throws big money at the next Buff / Big Panda for the flightless birds and finds himself having to cut back on the caviar and Dom in '24.

Sorry, but BOTH Liverpool AND the Red Sox were a complete shambles before Henry bought the clubs, and they’ve had tremendous success since.

The only thing he’s guilty of is spoiling the fan bases of both clubs and turning a portion of them into entitled whiners.

I don’t hear too many Liverpool supporters clamoring for the “glory days” when Tom Hicks owned the club. Nor do I hear too many fans clamoring for the Yawkeys either.

Entitled is right. I have to put up with many Pool fans on this side of the pond. They forget how bad it was under Hicks. The problem is the other London clubs are spending like crazy and want a piece of it. However they need to just look at Chelsea to see that spending big bucks doesn't always bring championships.

That’s ok. If you want to rebuild then lower your prices. Simple. They won’t be seeing my ass until they put a top team that resembles their top three pricing.

Liverpool's net spending has been the equivalent of a mid-table EPL team, that is embarrassing for a team of their world wide stature. The day Klopp leaves, they will be fortunate to finish 6th if these owners are still around. Like it or not to compete in the ever increasingly EPL you have to spend big, at least be in the ballpark of the likes of Man U, Man City etc, the money-ball approach no longer works. Klopp has made wine out of water but even his magical work has limits. Just because the previous American owners were absolutely terrible dosen't mean Liverpool fans have to settle forever for owners who truly don't give a crap for anything but how to bleed as much money out of this club as possible before selling.

Gotta say, I'm not sure how a years long decline we all watched happen in real time is on the ownership group that just bought the team 16 months ago.

I mean, they kept Hextall too long, but the guy got the job right before they bought the team so I get it.

I hope the Penguins suck for the rest of eternity, but the track record of TFSG is pretty good when they take over a team, so I'm not celebrating just yet.

The spending is weird. I don't think they're actually spending less money than they used to, the spending just isn't nearly as productive/efficient.

When they first bought the team, they saw market inefficiencies and took advantage of them. Feels like they haven't been able to beat the league to a new trend for a while. I assume it's mostly driven by apathy and it will only get worse once they inevitably add the Vegas NBA expansion team.

We should probably take this over to the soccer thread, because I would LOVE to continue this conversation.

To say that FSG has bled Liverpool or the Red Sox dry is simply not true. In the 20 years since they've owned the Sox, they've had 11 playoff appearances, 7 ALCS appearances and 4 WS Titles and they've always been Top 10 in payroll, mostly top 6 with this year being the only exception. That's hardly an ownership group milking the cow.

In the 12 years they've owned Liverpool, they've won the Premiership, an FA Cup, 2 League Cups and a Champions League title. Yes, they are having a down year, but they've spent more money on net expenditures (transfers in - transfers out) than Man City over the past 2 years.

The fact that both teams have made questionable decisions on how that money has been spent, doesn't fall entirely on ownership. That falls on Bloom and Julian Ward....
