I figure we'll just promote one of Prout or Erixon and let them play a few games and see how they do before we make a move. We've got these kids exactly for situations like this; let's put 'em to work and see if they're ready to step up before we conclude they're doomed.

Yeah. I think we might be a little paranoid at this point. We know what Prout and Erixson can do up here (see last year). Goubelef too a lesser extent. Who can we add via trade that is better than those two without significantly depleting out asset pool?

Given this quote, im pretty sure it will be Prout coming in to take over for Tyutin.

Hartsburg said Prout is “probably ready to come back and be the player that we saw last year.” Prout was a surprise standout after he was recalled for the final 28 games of last season, but his effectiveness in 27 games this season was limited by groin, back and shoulder injuries. He was sent to Springfield late last month after a stretch of healthy scratches. “Him going down and getting quality minutes was the best thing for him,” Hartsburg said. “It wasn’t like he was horrible. I thought he had some solid minutes for us. But he should come back and be a more confident player.”

Would expect the #CBJ to recall two of the following defensemen -- Dalton Prout, Tim Erixon, Cody Goloubef -- in the next 24-48 hours.

To clear space on roster, D Fedor Tyutin will likely be IR'd. Out 2-3 weeks from time of injury, so will miss 1-2 weeks of action.

Big question to settle in next couple of days: who slots in beside Jack Johnson on No. 1 defensive pair, and how other pairs are affected.

Porty asks, and in light of the Hartsburg quote above (thanks CBJB16):

Do you just slot someone into Tyutin's spot or do you move guys up/around?

What's wrong with Prout/JJ? Or you could do Nikitin/JJ and put Prouter with Savard (or Erixon/Golo, as I'd prefer).

Maybe they elevate Wiz/Murray pairing to #1 and then pair JJ/Nikitin and Prout/Erixon/Goloubef/Savard as your third pairing.
This, except I'd that I'd expect the second pair to initially be JJ/Prout (seeing as though those two did such good work together last year) with further adjustments as needed.

I'm not sure if talking about first pair/second pair, etc.. is the way to do it. It's more about roles. Some teams have a top pair that's more offence with a separate shutdown unit, but what we call the top pair is the shutdown unit.

Tyutin's on the shutdown pair with JJ, and he's on the second power play unit. Who fills those roles?

Realistically the shutdown unit is either going to be JJ/Prout, JJ/Nikitin, or Prout/Nikitin. I'm a bit intrigued by the last option, because when they're on Prout/Nikitin are an excellent shutdown unit and it would allow JJ to focus on offence.

Erixon/JJ
Murray/Wiz
Nikitin/Prout

We have the depth to ride this out. 2-3 weeks, maybe 10 games tops. I like Prout myself as it will give JJ a little more freedom to roam which he's been effectively doing.

Did you seriously use Tyutin and "shutdown" in the same sentence?

I'd have gone, again, with JJ/Prout, but I wouldn't mind seeing how this works...

You did just now.

Seriously. We get it. You don't like Tyutin. We figured that out forever ago. Please move on.

Clean win.

Supposedly, Prout is back to being healthy and 100% ... if that's the case:

Johnson/Prout
Murray/Wisniewski
Nikitin/Savard

Not a bad group at all ... if Prout is anywhere near where he finished out last season, we should be just fine.

I don't get it.

Based on the first quote; the second couldn't be any more true.

He's more of a hybrid; but he's perfectly capable of a shut down role. I wouldn't recommend it for 23 minutes a night, but he's infinitely better than what you make him out to be.

Your irrational dislike of him is a couple of Olympic appearance too old. Get over it already.

Tyutin had too much pain to even skate today and has been shut down for now.

That doesn't sound like anything that is going to heal in a week.

@Aportzline sounds to me like they downplayed the injuries so no one would raise prices to take advantage of desperation

I agree with this guy

It's absolutely playoff time now. No injuries will be given a straight answer until the season is over. I'm betting they are both a month away from playing at least. if these were truly minor injuries, I doubt they would have acquired a D at all because of our supposed "depth" in the D position.

Prout's time in Springfield seems to have done him well but there is no confidence in Goloubef or Erixon. Erixon is apparently battling the dreaded lower body injury too.
