Favorite Habs player of all time that wasn't 'A Star'

For me it's Oleg Petrov!!

I'm glad he's getting lots of love in this thread.

I also liked Valery Bure.

I remember at one point we had Valery Bure and Oleg Petrov centered by Saku Koivu... and we witnessed the birth of the Smurf Line!!

I also liked Steve Begin for his heart and Max Lapierre because he was hilarious!!

I have a thing for big, 2-way guys even if they may lack offense so guys like Mcphee, Bulis, Pacioretty, Weise and Scott Thornton

There are a lot. Loved McPhee and Skrudland, Keaner, Petrov, Brunet, Gilchrist, definitely Odelein and Souray and for a little bit Rivet and Komisarek - all tough heart and soul players - even liitle Petrov. The abuse that the little guy took during the "drag him down who cares era" was a sight to behold. He just kept motoring.

I also liked Valeri Bure - an underrated player. The start of the smurfs began with Bure, Koivu, Petrov. The brief Cammy - Gomez - Gionta line were posers compared to those 3. Loved them.

Guys like Carbonneau, Gainey and Souray were definately stars. I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise. For me, it's Zednik, he was talent before I knew what talent was.

Carbonneau wasn't a star, he belong in this thread.

Souray, beside a few years when his stats were inflated by Markov on the other hand, don't belong.

I liked Zednik too. I liked Zednik before he played for the Habs.

He's a guy who's comparable to Peca and Lehtinen. From what I can remember, these guys were definately considered stars. He was one of those guys who everyone knew wasn't a top point producer but was still considered a star because his two-way game was so effective.

How many all-star games did Carbo participate in? I get what you're saying but he wasn't a star in the true sense of the word.

Russ "Le Chevreuil" Courtnall.

Pat Burns had nicknamed him "chevreuil" (deer) because he used to skate all over the ice with such speed but Burns thought it was all style and preferred north-south players.

Hmmm... sort of reminds me of MT and Sekac... :sarcasm:

Lyle Odelein, good all around D, really nice person, down to earth. Huge smile that drove other teams crazy. I still have the front page of Lapresse when he managed 5 assist, then scored a huge hat-trick.

Odie was the Bomb.
One unforgettable end to end rush resulting in a goal...
And nothing but pure grit off the glass in your face wanna go grin and win...

Adding a young Odelein would be huge for the current team. I'd be thrilled if Tinordi could become this. Obviously people expect more from a 1st round pick, but a young, tough, big team-player D...

Souray was a talented Odelein while he was here, and I loved him too.

Where to start, what decade or in five year increments, anyway you cut it there are literally dozens & dozens that I can think of off the top of my head. Ralph Backstrom, Jimmy Roberts, Dougie Jarvis, Guy Carbonneau, Yvon Lambert, Brian Skrudland, Brian Savage, Richard Zednik, Eric Desjardins, Kirk Muller, Saku Koivu, Tomas Plekanec, are just a few, Dougie Risebrough, Claude Provost, JC Tremblay, Gilles Tremblay, Mario Tremblay, Donald Audette(Short Stint but memorable) Pierre Bouchard, Craig Ludwig, Brian Engblom, Rod Langway, I could go on all night with stories of particular games, but these guys always came to play every shift, every game, really passionate character types that winning is the only thing. Without a Stanley Cup Title it was a bad season types, John Ferguson comes to mind right after saying that.:laugh::nod::nod::nod:

I liked Brian Skrudland.

Always thought Benoit Brunet was much better than what people gave him credit for. He was Lupulesque in his toughness though.

Also thought Hackett did a pretty honest job while here.

Holy crap, Hackett with the Sharks had a bad year...
