Tonight Alex Ovechkin scored against Daniil Tarasov of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Tarasov’s father, Vadim Tarasov, played goalie in the KHL from 2002-2013. Apparently Ovechkin scored on the elder Tarasov during the 2002-3 and 2004-5 seasons.

Certainly two generations of skaters have scored on the same goalie (e.g., Howe & sons), but I’m curious about the inverse. Had this feat been accomplished before tonight, either in the NHL or another “major” league like the KHL?

I’d imagine Howe or Jagr would be two of the more likely candidates.

Edit:
Upon further review, this isn’t the first time Ovi has scored on the younger Tarasov… see thread linked below. Thanks to @Alex K for the correction

Dave Keon scored on both Dennis and his son Pat Riggin.

While a leaf Keon scored on Dennis who played on the Red wings during the '63 season.

Keon would later defect to the WHA and the New England Whalers where the team would face the Birmingham Bulls during the '79 season. Keon scored 2 goals on Pat Riggin.

It’s not as easy researching old SEL stats and game sheets as it is for the NHL, but Rolf (father) and Stefan (son) Ridderwall have both faced Peter Forsberg, Markus Näslund and Niklas Sundström. I was able to confirm that neither Forsberg nor Näslund scored on Ridderwall Jr., however Sundström did at least once, in 2008-09. Then it’s the matter of finding out who were on the receiving end of his 7 goals scored during the 1992-93 season.

There are definitely other players who probably have had games against both Ridderwalls and are worth looking at, but the MoDo trio seemed a good start.

The late Stefan Liv’s son Herman Liv has turned 18 and is yet to make his SHL debut, but if he starts getting pro starts within this season or the next, there are still plenty of guys around who faced Liv Sr. in 2009-10.

Edit: Just realized Tero Leinonen who played in the SEL between 2004 and 2007, and 2nd tier Hockeyallsvenskan in 2010-11, has a son Topias (drafted by the Sabres, 2nd rd 2022), currently backstopping Mora of Hockeyallsvenskan.

Just to say, I’m now thinking there’s likely a bunch of prime suspects for this thread among euro players. There’s always guys getting their first shots in senior/pro leagues at young ages, and guys extending their careers stepping down a tier. Not saying there’s a million father-son goalie connections, but there’s a few inviting many investigations…

There is also Petter and Viktor Rönnqvist. Though Viktor sucks a lot so doubt he ever or will ever face someone his dad faced.

Maybe Thomas Östlund and his son. Lots of old players scoring goals in Switzerland.

To be fair to goalies, wouldn't the inverse of this be "father-son goalie duos who made saves against the same player"?

Would anyone remember if Ken Griffey Sr. gave up a homerun, was replaced on the mound by Jr., who also gave a homerun?

Really though, that seems like a more Mariners-esque outcome.
