Sunday is still the final active day of the season. After that, sure. I guess they have banked enough cap space down the stretch to get creative but I still find it pretty unlikely for a few reasons...They don't have the cap space to call anyone up?
Disagree.
They have $43,000 in cap space. They can call up multiple players earning $900,000 per season since it only counts as $4,800 per day (each) on the cap - which is calculated daily you must remember.
And then Sunday, there is no cap because the season is over.
- Hershey is in the midst of trying to make the AHL playoffs. They need to win out most likely. More importantly...
- Trotz has said all year that by managing ice-time there's less reason to sit players. Carlson has sat out the past two due to a recent injury but I don't expect largely healthy players to sit. I similarly doubt Boston calls up a couple of ****-stirrers just for the hell of it. If anything they should get a quick look at JFK, McAvoy, Debrusk and the like if possible. I'd think it's more likely they'll look to win using close to their full roster.
- There's still the limit of post-deadline, non-emergency recalls. The Caps have may have already used three of the four on Carey. Emergency recalls could happen but it's doubtful. If anyone steps in it's likely the small rotation of existing reserves: Schmidt, Chorney and Carey.
- There's been little suggestion they'll do anything different post-clinch. It could happen but my sense is it will be limited and they'll just play the game in front of them and not resort to any gamesmanship.
If there's anything interesting in Washington's strategy it may be who they start Saturday. If they're less inclined to want to face Boston they could go Grubauer. More likely they'll play Holtby as a prelude to getting ready, even if that could mean facing Boston.
