Player Discussion Fabian Zetterlund traded to Ottawa

He plays like Alfie’s son. Tons of heart, he wants it, just not a natural feel for the game.

Love the hustle

Yes they want him, but they aren’t paying him for what he was in SJ or the potential fans see in him, they are going to pay him for his roll on this team which is a depth winger who isn’t a top 6 so he won’t get Tolvanne money because that dude had a good playoffs and he pay is largely based on that.

I think fans have overvalued Zetterlund because of the excitement of a Swedish winger with a frame like that and such a giant face and they are overvaluing his contract too.

I don’t think he makes more then $2.75 on 1 or two years but let’s see - a really good playoffs could change that number for him up or down
The cap is going way up and they gave up alot to get him. Of course his last performance has weight. Silly to say otherwise. Signing him to a 1 or 2 year deal would be bad. He's walking to UFA in that scenario. He does other things than score. I hope they sign him for a minimum of 3 years. Probably in the 3.5 to 4 range.

I think you need to look forward, rather than back. Reality is, Giroux hasn't re-signed. He could choose to go to free agency. We needed someone with some offensive upside to replace his possible loss. Giroux is also slowing down significantly. He won't be top-line material for many more seasons, if at all. When we got Cousins and Amadio, they were supposed to play on the third and fourth lines. Zetterlund is good in all facets of the game and has major offensive upside when compared to players like Amadio, Cousins and even Perron. We need him here and he needs to be integrated into one of the top two lines. Zetterlund is going to score, he's already proved that in San Jose. The real point is, in the last two games he has looked like one of the best players on the ice back checking and in forechecking. He's young, has huge upside, is a horse on the ice and hard on pucks.

Zetterlund is literally your style of player. I am not sure why you're complaining about him so hard.
It also took Zetterlund time to get used to San Jose as well.

Don’t pretend like you don’t know why lol

If there was ever a player who needed a 1 year ‘show me’ contract it’s him. Unless he has a huge playoffs and changes the dynamic. Just don’t see a world where they give him more then $3 million a season

Once the dam breaks, I think he'll explode. Has played well and had good chances, similar to Pinto just before he broke out in December. Not the same player either but when Duchene first came here, he was so snakebitten it was a factor in the team falling apart. He had like 1 or 2 goals in 20 games or something. But he got dynamic after...

...there was no pressure anymore

He does not have a history of scoring in bunches or being a streaky scorer. He does have a history of getting shots on goal even when not scoring.

He does somethings well. I think his play without the puck defensively can be better.. cleaning up some details but its not terrible just inconsistent. I'd like to see him use his body more vs attempt to stick check.
He is not great with the puck on his stick in transporting it or protecting it.
He has a knack to find open space .. and can shoot it when he gets it.. His strength imo.

I think he is a 3rd line player that does not have a perfect fit here at the moment.. He can have a spot up the lineup next year or after with more decline from Giroux or Perron but unless they continue to push Amadio to the 4th line when Tkachuk comes back .. I wouldn't put him there.

They have to do something to push Gaudette out when Cousin's returns to improve the 4th line with whoever else they decide to plug in there

Cozens got dropped right into the top 6 playing with great linemates. Zetterlund had his soul crushed with the weight of playing on Gaudette's wing before getting elevated to a role he's more suited too. Looked good since the move, just snakebitten.
How many games has Zetterlund played now on the top line, or a line higher than the 4th line? It’s a question. I don’t know the answer, and I’m just curious.

I can be hasty at times with my evaluations, so I’ve decided to be patient. I really hope he elevates his play and starts producing more.

FZ stats so far are 1 point in 13 games.

If you look at the game logs without digging deeper
he has 7 games with 14:47 and greater in TOI and 8 games with 20+ shifts

The link below shows TOI at 93:06 with Stutzle and 55:46 without at 5v5 .. getting close to twice as much with vs without

looks that way maybe 7-8 games up the lineup.
OK, thanks.

When it comes to ice time stats, I can spot when a player (like a defenseman) has a huge amount of ice time, or when a marginal 4th line player hardly gets any minutes. Its everything in between those 2 opposite ends of the spectrum that I have trouble with.

$3.5-$4M seems like far too much.
I hope he signs a contract for 3 years at a decent AAV of up to $3M which would be double what he is making now. So far he has not done much as a Senator to prove he is worth more.

Happy Staios did some moves to improve the team, but this one hasn’t worked so far, just be honest.

His ask was probably around 5 á year and griper said F it.

Can’t see this guy getting less than 4 with hos previous number - and should get that with those, but the sens might hesitate on it, but he’ll take it to arbitration for sure.

Don’t like the coach decision trying to jump start someone clearly not working out - play the guys that deliver.

Maybe a healthy scratch and some self reflection might lower his ask and give him (agent’s) a reality check.

Amadio and even Gaudette makes way more out of their time on the ice
Even though I’ve never been high on any, but you gotta be honest.

Zetterlund needs to show some accountability and not being put in a top 6 role he can’t handle.
Not getting any points is just bad and can’t be defended.

For now this is looking like a bad trade.
All his former numbers with sharks and lack of there of has nothing to do with his performance
In Senators.

He was brought in to produce but has done nothing more than underperform, sad but true.

People talking about him being a replacement further on and this and that slowing down and there is a need in the future -
Isn’t that something for the off-season to deal with, when the asking price is normally lower for a player?
