Player Discussion Fabian Lysell

what I have liked in the last few games I`ve watched him is I only saw 2 fly bye`s, the other times, while he may not have won a puck battle or forced a turnover, he at least forced the opponent into making a play, progress for sure
Fly byes drive me insane. A couple guys on my men’s league team do this. It’s lazy.

me too, I remember a coach once yelling at me insisting that if he saw me do one more of those he`d staple my ass to the bench for the game.

He was always on my ass defensively, by the end of the year and into the next , he used me as the shut down guy vs opponents, really turned me into a solid defensive player, could contribute somewhat offensively but was always on PK 1 and out there preserving leads.

That coach was the dude I hated most initially but came to really appreciate, he said to me coming out of tryouts, "you know there are 3 zones on the ice right" :) haha, great dude, his son Mark Patterson had a cup of coffee in the NHL with, I believe, the Whalers

I still do them now but I`m in a +55 league and rarely have the foot speed to pressure anyone

I feel you. I’m turning 40 next month and I’ve slowed down substantially. When I was 25 I was a speed demon.

To be fair, there have been a lot of criticisms of Lysell on this forum that are based on pretty flimsy evidence. "Character concerns" come to mind, and also last summer he spent in Sweden and that apparently was a giant red flag for some, though there were never any reports that he partied his life away and came back to Providence with 10lbs of beer fat and an bad attitude. He probably trained in Sweden if he's like most other professional athletes. Anyway, I think the reaction is fair based on all the shit that has been heaped on Lysell around here since he was drafted.
Yeah there’s that, and scolding professional athletes that they need to “work hard”. Lol.

Does anyone know where any of the other players go in the offseason? Does anyone know that Lohrei spent last offseason in Wisconsin? Why is it only Lysell that gets his choice turned into a character flaw?

Obviously still has some stuff to work on, but I do find him noticeable out there and has had a few net drives and breaks where he used his speed effectively.

Still think he can be a good player. Big offseason for him.

Clearly that is the reason for his -40 this season.

Do gyms not exist in Sweden? Not sure it matters much if he goes home to train or stays in Boston as long as he gets a program from Boston’s trainers.

there's no strong connection between what we see and what we say other than what the player does as results

a player goes to their home in europe and shares some pictures that indicate they enjoyed some of their time off, then comes back and blows the doors off the league - nobody even talks about their summer routine. The come back and struggle, now everyone has their microscope out playing CSI.

His quote made it sound like he is staying in Sweden for a significant amount of time.

Really? What about it gave you that idea? He just mentioned taking the puck back home to Sweden and "keep it around the house with my family." I honestly don't see how you can read that as him staying a significant amount of time. The puck looks like it will be, though

He should be busting his ass 13 hours a day 7 days a week in Brighton not traveling home to see his family. Who goes home during the offseason? Only this soft Swede, amirite?

He already spent last summer in Sweden, when as Dom said, he should have been in Boston training. That quote gave me vibes but maybe nothing. Time will tell.

My issue was more 2 summers ago when the Bruins spent weeks following him around Sweden making videos. And then he spent a couple more following PJ Axelsson around for even more videos.

Compared it to Matt Poitras who I walked into on May 15 after his season was over working his ass off because he wanted to make the team out of camp. And if you recall, I said then don't sleep on Poitras making the team out of camp and got laughed at. A lot.

And we have seen there are a lot of guys who have talent, but have never been willing to do the extra work, I have no idea if Lysell is that guy or not. We have seen guys leave who were not willing to do the work. We know through Dom that Poitras is one who is willing to do the work. The NHL career is waiting for Lysell, he has to be willing to take it. It's a huge summer for him
