Player Discussion Fabian Lysell

He made a play last night where he blew through a defender and stole the puck, and even gave a second effort, but then not much of a third, might have been out of gas but that’s where he needs to keep pushing the break through

Remember everyone, Marchand Krejci both went awhile before scoring a point

Lysell is knocking at the door, if he continues to work on determination the flood gates could open

What kind of drills should he be using to work on determination?

The kid looks like one of our best forwards with the puck on his stick. People just hate Sweeney and want him to fail. I am seeing a handful of times each game where Lysell gets the puck at his own blue line and essentially becomes a one man zone entry, slipping passes through the defender’s stick to find his teammates. Minten was creating nowhere near as many offensive plays and gets praised. Nothing against Minten, but this is why the Bruins can’t find offensive players. Lysell looks like he is squeezing the stick a little bit right now, probably because he has had multiple outstanding games but continues to be treated as if he sucks.

I'm thinking your definition of outstanding games is much different from the norm.

Curious what folks who've seen him in Providence this year have to say about his game. What, if anything, isn't translating to the NHL?
Having watched the large majority of his games in Providence, I would diagnose two issues with him at the moment.
1) Confidence/overthinking. I mentioned this earlier in his stint but he still seems jittery with the puck and rushing decisions which usually leads to suboptimal plays. In Providence he exuded confidence and had no issues weaving around defenders and carrying the puck across zones at a high rate of speed. In Boston, the puck has usually been on & off his stick within a second or two.
2) Adjusting to NHL defenders. I think he is still figuring out what he can/can't execute against higher quality defenders. It seems like defenders are closing on him quicker than he is used to and he either doesn't react fast enough resulting in a turnover or he just gets rid of the puck as soon as possible (low % shot, hope pass into space, etc).
There have been a couple plays here and there where he has looked like his AHL self -- he's had a few breakaways, he made a nice play this weekend where he made a shimmy at the blueline and completely lost his defender -- so he has shown some ability to make plays at the NHL level. But it remains to be seen whether he ever gains the confidence needed or adapts his game to the NHL to live up to his potential. I'm hoping Sacco at least gives him the remaining 4 games to try to improve, then they send him back to Providence for the playoffs and then see whether he is able to win a full-time job in training camp.

I agree that I wouldn't call any of his games in Boston "outstanding" but I would say he's played better than other, established forwards in several of his games so far. I like to check HockeyStatCards on Twitter after games to see if their advanced stats matches the eye test and they usually do. Aside from last night's game, Lysell has typically been middle of the pack amongst forwards for their GameScore metric. To me that suggests a) he hasn't been a complete negative so far, b) you'd be worse off if you gave that ice time to other players on the team and therefore, c) he deserves more time to see if he can figure things out at the NHL level (especially with the season dead in the water).

his horrible effort on , I believe the Tuch goal where he reaches for the puck in the right circle and the Sabres player easily steals it did it for me

Plays with a complete absence of desire unless the puck is on his stick and even then..sad really, was super pumped about this kid a few years ago
You are right, I think it was the Tuch goal not a good effort. I noticed he looks great with the puck when he as room, and no one around, him I have said the same about Poitras, who can make that nice play when he has room also, unfortunately there is not a lot room in the NHL.

Biggest problem with the Tuch goal was that he made the same exact mistake just a minute before, soft play on the puck trying to jump in the rush before gaining possession, and gave up the exact same shot from the exact same spot on the ice. A few minutes later and Dahlin scores from that spot again as Lysell is covering . I don't mind mistakes so long as guys show they are learning from them. Think he was dropped for a few shifts after it.

That is the point I have been making with Loheri same mistakes over and over again, and have been told that he needs time, and he is older than Lysell, although Loheri, I think might be the better player in the long run, we can only hope.

Lorhei is struggling right now for sure - but he also has shown he can produce at this level. Lysell hasn't.

Of all our busts, this one hurts the most I think. Because 95% of us wanted this pick when it came up.

The other busts were sort of dart throws most of us decried right away. This one is more personal.

Hoping this stretch to end the season gives him some motivation for next year & to work extra hard this summer. Love he's willing to take a hit to make plays. Doesn't seem to be getting crushed as hard as Poitras had been.
He's had some very nice plays & some pretty big oopsies.

I still hate how he plays so high in the offensive zone. Seems to always be up near the blue line looking for a pass.

Not sure why peeps are calling him a bust, still think he has time to figure it out.

Little soon for the "bust" talk. He just has to take the next step. This isn't his last chance but it may be his best opportunity.

At the draft I wanted L'Heueaux but was quickly convinced we did well by the reaction in here.

Why is he a bust? Because he's not producing on a shit team where basically nobody other than Geekie and Pasta are producing?

Did anyone really expect him to have an impact on this roster when he got called up?

Are we gonna call Minten a bust too if he goes 0/0/0 -3 in his 8 remaining games with this team?

I surely didn't. I hoped he might get some points, but more than that, I wanted him to get consistent NHL playing time and start taking the next step. Looks to me like he is doing that. Whether he ever fully gets there is unknown at this time, but I am not going to make any judgments about his NHL future based on point production on this dumpster fire of a team.

People are penciling in Mittelstadt into 2C next year and he has one point in his last 8 games, and that was a tap in that I could have scored.
