I wonder if we might consider trading Martinook at this point? He's here because we are paying for leadership and energy, but with the additions of Burns and Patches, his leadership is looking like an unnecessary luxury. Maybe Martinook and something for Puljujarvi?
“PRAISE BE MCJESUS!!!”

I can kinda hear it, might work there.

We need to find a way to get Kessel on the cheap to continue on the theme of old men.

I wonder if the borg is going to try something a bit crazy like trade Pesce for a NHL ready younger Peesh on league minimum then use that moneys to sign Klingberger.

I like this.

I still would like to have a mean 3rd pairing defenseman to patrol the blue line and clear the crease. I would mayyybeee consider Chara on the cheap to see if he can mentor some of the young kids....and ya kno'...fight Trouba for league minimum. Not a fake tough guy like Edmunson....but a mean sob....kind of like a 3rd pairing dman version of Ferland.

Does Chara have any legs left? Dude was sooooooo slow last year, I can't imagine we'd want to sign a guy that is literally a pilon.

So, on SiriusXM they are talking Calgary and what happens next with them. Specifically, since JonnyHockey has left, what do they do with Tkachuk? Do they trade him or risk loosing him if he doesn't sign? I wonder if there is a move there for the Canes as we've dealt RFAs to them before.

We'd have to figure out fitting him in the cap this year and long term, but Necas ++ for Tkachuk could interest me.

If we wish to offer them some cap space to get Kadri and convince Tkachuk to stay, I easily take Kylington and Dube off their hands.

If you are talking Tkachuck, I dont think that is in our wheel house. Tkachuk's have zero issue waiting until they get their dollar amount, they dont seem to be team friendly types. The cost to acquire him and then move out the space needed to get him would be quite astronomical.

Im still in the money puck mind, so a swap of Gardiner for Lucic wouldnt be a bad thought. As long as Lucic passes through an Anaheim or the like for max retention. a 2.625 million lucic isnt awful. It would be a 300k cap savings over burying Gardiner in Chicago. Granted it is taking Gardiner's two buyout cap hits and using them in one season (which isnt terrible). Lucic isnt likely to waive for just anywhere. I dont think the retention will cost a lot. It is 437,500 in real cash for 2.625 mil in cap. For Calgary that is a 1.6 million cap savings or 2.7 if they bury him, potentially 4 million if they buy him out. Lucic is basically buy out proof.

Lucic and Kylington for Gardiner and a small add?
Lucic to Arizona for retention for Martinook and Bokk? Unlikely I know

Patch-Aho-Turbo
Svech-KK-Jarvis
Kase-Staal-Necas
Lucic-Drury-Fast

Slavin-Burns
Skjei-Pesce
Kylington-Chatfield

not too bad.

I generally agree but Tkachuk is a 40 goal 100 point power forward, a unicorn in the league these days. He'd fit so well with Aho, if Ferland's brief healthy stretch here was any indication. At some point if we want to win a Cup I think we'll need a game breaking talent like that, Tkachuk would be one of the better options in my opinion if none of the current guys on the roster develop into it. Guys like him should never even become available and when they do pretty much the entire league would jump at the opportunity to get him.

Sure, if Tkachuk is willing to take 9-9.5 million for 8 years you make it work. I dont think he does that and I dont think we can afford it he wants more than 10 mil.

edit:

A quick cap friendly deal including Bear, Gardiner and Necas plus futures going to Calgary (value isnt important for this exercise) and Tkachuk signing a 8 x 9.5 mil deal, we are 1.54 million over the cap. That is with a 20 man roster.

Maybe we move out Martinook and then trade a Freddie, unnecessarily committing to Kochetkov as #1 for next season, we could make it work. We would have to sacrifice somewhere.

One thing about Cole departing that has me worried about Gardiner remaining on the roster is that Cole was a solid penalty killer when he wasn’t sitting in the box. I know the top 4 are all very good options but it would be nice to have another option on the roster to give those guys a break and limit their minutes

I have a feeling that they're going to straight-up tell Chatfield that if he wants to play in the NHL he needs to be able to fill this role.

Could easily move Martinook and Raanta instead of Freddie, no? We'd have:

Tkachuk - Aho - TT
Svech - JK - Jarvis
Patches - Staal - Fast
Noesen - Drury - Kase

Slavin - Burns
Skjei - Pesce
Coghlan/Lajoie/other - Chatfield

Freddie
Pyotr

Would be right up against the cap but that's a Cup winning roster if you ask me. And we'll have plenty of cap space going forward with Staal, Patches, Fast off our books next season and looking past that ideally Morrow filling Burns' spot. I know it ain't gonna happen but I can dream can't I.

without a bunch of roster ready waiver exempt players, a 21 person roster is not a good option to start the season. It is possible, sure. Is only giving Pyotr 30-35 starts best for his development?

Do the Tkachuk's want to win or do they want to maximize the amount of money they put in their bank accounts?

I'm all for a player getting paid what their worth, and I think most sports franchise owners can afford to part with a few extra million here and there. Most of them have more money than a person could reasonably spend in a lifetime so hell yeah get out there and get it players. BUT, listening to Messier and Chelios when COL won the cup they put so much emphasis on how, in a salary capped league, a team has to find value somewhere to be competitive and win the whole damn thing. And one way to do that is to have your star players and leaders set the example like (as much as I hate the guy sometimes) Crosby. Look no further than CHI with their $10M pair, or the Parise and Suter deals in MIN to see how fast overpaying a "star" can cripple a team. So either pay your stars market value, and fill in with cheaper vet options, which requires having a track record of being in contention year after year, and ELC's, or your stars take a little pay cut, which frees up $$$ to shore up the depth.

Its a novel concept to most Hurricanes fans after suffering through the Karmanos era of just trying to figure out how to just hit the cap floor. But with ownership that's willing to spend and try and ice the best team possible, $1M here $500-800k there adds up, and all of a sudden your looking at the difference between signing or re-signing that homegrown 60-70pt winger vs. 50-60pt winger. I would say its harder for the sub $3-4MAAV kind of guys but for a player making $7-8M+ a season would you be willing to leave $500k-$1M on the table if it meant your team had a better shot at winning the whole enchilada? IF you've got an ownership that's proven and shown they're willing to spend to ice the best team they think they can.

These small things can end up being huge difference makers, and players (agents) trying to squeeze every last cent out of a contract is the fastest way to ruin a teams depth potential. It's a tough spot to be in, you don't want, and in a lot of cases cant loose a star player. Players and their agents know that and if they're willing to use that as leverage to try and get above market value, so long.

It's one thing I fear with Aho, and Pesce are they going to chase $$$ or are they willing to leave a little on the table and allow the Hurricanes to ice a perennial contender? As frustrating as it seems at times its one of the things I like about the approach that the Hurricanes FO has taken with contract negotiations. I'm also a fan of adding vets chasing a cup vs. the guys who have already won.

If I'm reading correctly Shorthanded TOI for last season
Slavin 257.5
Skjei 204.5
Pesce 196.7
Cole 187.3
Bear 52.4
Smith 48.1
TDA 9.7?

Burns 223.7

I think Burns can makeup for some of what Cole brought to the PK and they can still keep his total TOI down from what it was last season.

I get the value arguments. Teams have to watch for that and often don't, to their downfall. But the flip side of that coin is that to win cups you need some starpower to go with the value at other positions. That is something that the Canes are admittedly light on. Every hockey media organization (Athletic, NHLNetwork, etc.) constantly points out that deficit for our team. Adding Tkachuk would answer that weakness in a big way. It would be a very risky move as there is a real chance he only wants to play in St. Louis and would force is way out via his QO. But I would have to strongly consider it.

Ohh, it’s definitely a fine line, and I’m not saying Tkachuk wouldn’t be worth it. But I would have to think long and hard about signing any player to a $10M+ contract.

On a different note…

It would be awesome just very hard to do. Our better prospects are teetering on unlikely to move category. I doubt we move Drury or Morrow even for a player like Tkachuk. Hemosalmi, Kirovunen, Seeley, Suzuki, etc, sure. I dont know if they are in Calgary's wheelhouse. 2023 first and Philly's 2nd, have it. I think teams like NJ or other can throw more quality their way. We we would be volume.

as crazy as the east is getting with all the stars, getting another one is almost a necessity at this point.

I think Dube and Kylington are a more realistic play for us in terms of cap and realistic trade targets.

If you think you can sign the guy long term, you'd be a fool not to move both of those guys for him.
