Do the Tkachuk's want to win or do they want to maximize the amount of money they put in their bank accounts?
I'm all for a player getting paid what their worth, and I think most sports franchise owners can afford to part with a few extra million here and there. Most of them have more money than a person could reasonably spend in a lifetime so hell yeah get out there and get it players. BUT, listening to Messier and Chelios when COL won the cup they put so much emphasis on how, in a salary capped league, a team has to find value somewhere to be competitive and win the whole damn thing. And one way to do that is to have your star players and leaders set the example like (as much as I hate the guy sometimes) Crosby. Look no further than CHI with their $10M pair, or the Parise and Suter deals in MIN to see how fast overpaying a "star" can cripple a team. So either pay your stars market value, and fill in with cheaper vet options, which requires having a track record of being in contention year after year, and ELC's, or your stars take a little pay cut, which frees up $$$ to shore up the depth.
Its a novel concept to most Hurricanes fans after suffering through the Karmanos era of just trying to figure out how to just hit the cap floor. But with ownership that's willing to spend and try and ice the best team possible, $1M here $500-800k there adds up, and all of a sudden your looking at the difference between signing or re-signing that homegrown 60-70pt winger vs. 50-60pt winger. I would say its harder for the sub $3-4MAAV kind of guys but for a player making $7-8M+ a season would you be willing to leave $500k-$1M on the table if it meant your team had a better shot at winning the whole enchilada? IF you've got an ownership that's proven and shown they're willing to spend to ice the best team they think they can.
These small things can end up being huge difference makers, and players (agents) trying to squeeze every last cent out of a contract is the fastest way to ruin a teams depth potential. It's a tough spot to be in, you don't want, and in a lot of cases cant loose a star player. Players and their agents know that and if they're willing to use that as leverage to try and get above market value, so long.
It's one thing I fear with Aho, and Pesce are they going to chase $$$ or are they willing to leave a little on the table and allow the Hurricanes to ice a perennial contender? As frustrating as it seems at times its one of the things I like about the approach that the Hurricanes FO has taken with contract negotiations. I'm also a fan of adding vets chasing a cup vs. the guys who have already won.
