F Michael Misa - Saginaw Spirit, OHL (2025 Draft)

If memory serves a lot of scouts had him in the 15-16 range and he fell due to the reasons you mentioned, as well as a shoulder injury which was surgically repaired after the draft. Kid was crushed he was not selected in the 1st round.

I know Chernyshov's production has been good, but he doesn't look out of place in juniors. He didn't play well during the playoffs. Took a terrible penalty on Misiak yesterday.

Anyhow, this thread is about Misa who didn't play well either in the playoffs but could have been playing injured.

I haven't seen any of his tape from Russia, so much of me is surprised to hear he was supposedly great defensively in the KHL. I guess it's a lower scoring league, but he looks completely different.

Back to Misa, I do think he makes Misa look better, but not enough to discredit any of what Misa has shown so far.
 
I sort of get the same vides that you got from Lafreniere here, like a lack of star quality abilities. Watching his season highlights it doesn't feel like he ''created'' a lot of goals. I like his one timer though.
 
This injury has yet to be made official and came out of nowhere. When did it happen? How long has he been playing hurt? What’s the severity? He had a four-point game in the season final against Flint then vanished in the ensuing playoff series. Did it happen in between? Late in the Flint game? Early into Game 1?

His coach used him at least 25+ mins a game in each of the first two games and overtime in Game 3 might have pushed it to 30 mins. I watched every shift and I would have noticed if he got skipped, which he never was. Was Chernyshov hurt too? He was equally bad the first two games.

So an 18-year-old with an apparent injury was still double-shifted by his coach who also used him extensively on PK1 and PP1? Normal in the NHL with star players under contract, but this might be a first for me with a top draft prospect.

I get playing hurt in the playoffs but usually the kid, the family, and the agent almost always agree to shut it down for him be ready for the draft.

You can bet if this happened to Wemby or Sanders the media would be all over it. Weird that the mainstream isn’t reporting the actual facts.

My guess would be that it occurred in the Flint game. That got super chippy and Misa took some shots as the game went on. He could have been at 95% heading into the Erie series. Erie was playing super physical as well. Injury gets worse as the series goes on until he can't go for game 5. It's extremely common for CHL players to play games in the playoffs with injuries that they normal would sit a game or two for. Its not that weird that Laz was double shifting him. If Misa tells him he's good to go for another shift, he's not going to tell Misa no. Hell you have no idea if Misa wanted to play in game 5 and the coach, his agent etc told him to sit out to preserve himself. If you want to believe he's not hurt, go for it. Seems like you have your mind made up on most things before hand anyway. I don't think you legitimately care what the answers to your questions are. Its super weird your trying to paint Laz as this neglectful coach or that Misa is lying about being hurt.

I am asking relevant questions that the public should know about and you are 10000000 percent speculating. No need for sanctimony or creating scarecrows. My opinion is less important than the actual truth, which you don’t have. Hence, my questions.

Scratching the OHL’s top scorer who just happens to be draft eligible after he struggled mightily for four games is a story. Headline news for draft coverage.

Maybe you’re in the dark, but this is how sports reporting works.
 
One of my twitter followers who covers prospects told me he heard from somewhere that it was Misa’s back. If true, then you can’t just dismiss it. Not after what’s going on with Lindstrom and McQueen.

Cool. So why were you trying to say that he was lying about being hurt or that his coach was purposely ignoring his players needs?

I never said Misa was faking an injury, even though you deeply want to believe I do. I do think his coach was irresponsible playing him if and only if Misa or the team’s medical staff told him he had an injury that would impact his effectiveness. If both Misa and the coach were in agreement, the decision to play him did not benefit the team since they were bounced in five games anyway.

My opinion is strictly facts-based — Misa stunk in the playoffs and he was scratched in an elimination game with a possible back injury. I know this reality stings for a Saginaw fan like yourself, but a reality nonetheless.

Junior hockey isn’t well covered. Only really a thing in Canada, broken into thirds geographically, not part of the day to day discourse much, only the occasional nationally televised game outside the memorial cup. If there’s an injury, teams will conduct their diligence with the draft process.

Not necessarily better but it does seem ripe for players to put up monster point totals at the moment.

To be fair, that kind of poster, who's very invested in championing a prospect by obsessively putting down others, has always been around on HF.

That said, maybe I'm wrong but I don't remember there being quite as many posters thrashing the CHL to prop up the NCAA before. Maybe the current political atmosphere has given birth to a renewed US hockey nationalism?

I’m talking about draft coverage, which should be a year-round thing. NHL.com does a good job in terms of content but they are never, ever critical. The Misa situation doesn’t have to be front-page news, but we’re a week+ away from lottery slots becoming official and about a month from the drawing itself. It’s newsworthy to report on a top prospect’s struggles considering the pre-playoff rhetoric centered on Misa being the runaway best forward in the class.

It’s not that deep. Misa’s flaws were revealed as part of any long-term assessment. No need to overstate the reasoning behind a very normal and very valid draft-season evaluation. Schaefer is ranked ahead of Hagens and Frondell, and deservedly so. Thereafter? Martone, Bear, Misa, Desnoyers. All from the CHL. It’s not a good NCAA crop after R1 and its overall depth is thin like every other year.

Still, the numbers don’t lie. CHL is in a bad spot. Started going downhill after 2015. You’ll have to poll NHL GMs and scouts to get an idea why the number of CHL-trained kids who become NHL regulars keeps declining. Europe has surpassed the CHL on the goalie front. The AHL rule is to keep the CHL from bleeding revenue, but NHL player dev staffs consider it an unnecessary constraint. The teams want their kids in the AHL.
