Projects to be one of the top players out of the US for the 2026 NHL draft. Kid is ultra skilled, good skater and has a real good shot. Should definitely be a kid to keep an eye on going forward.

Was wondering if anyone had any information on this kid? Seems like he could be a kid to keep an eye on going forward.

One of the top US-born players in the world in his age group, there is some that may argue best but that is neither here, nor there. He is extremely skilled with fantastic skating ability. He is a fun player to watch. I suspect that he'll skip the U15 team at Shattucks next year and go straight to the U16 team.

He did you one better!

He’s already 6-0, 172 at age 15 per EP (and who knows that may not be up to date) so this isn’t a guy like Whitelaw who is skilled but projects as undersized moving up the ladder.

Skill, speed, frame and now the SSM stamp of approval being a 15 year-old prep player.

Any way you slice it, this puts a stamp on him as a guy to watch, big time.

Regardless of where hockey takes him, at 6' 172 as a 15 year old, his lunch money is guaranteed this year.

Wow, there will be a lot of pressure on Motzko to get at least one of Berchild and Bumgarner for the Gophers in next year's recruiting cycle.

Shattuck's measurements are notoriously unreliable but Berchild is listed at 5'8.5 and 162 on the prep roster. Shattuck had him at 5'8 and 142 last season. Who knows what's accurate but I'd be surprised if he's what EP lists. Usually when Shattuck's measurements are off it's because they've inflated them and not the other way around.

That’s a crazy inaccuracy from EP, if wrong, I wonder where they get their info from sometimes.

Then again he could very well have grown since “measured” at 14. Seems plausible but I guess we will have to wait and see.

Either way, impressive that he made prep.

They'll pull the information from anywhere, often self-reported, from a random tournament roster, or the like. EP is highly unreliable for measurements.

Shattuck is not reliable either but I doubt they'd say he's 5'8.5 if he's actually 6'+. Even if he's only 5'8.5 and 162, that's a pretty solid build at 15. And could be a good sign that maybe he's not standing out just because he's an early bloomer physically.

Crazy company he’s with. Will he be given prime minutes in the top 6?

Can someone explain to me why making the prep team is a big deal? I understand he's younger than the rest of the roster. Got it. However, who does the Prep team play that makes him making the team a great thing? Do they play better competition than the AAA teams for SSM?

Because it's basically the best prep team in the country so obviously it's harder to make as a 10th grader than some middle of the pack U18 team.

1+1 in his first game. They won 7-1. Might try to catch a game if they play an elite league team with a big prospect on the other side.

They sometimes play the NTDP 17’s towards the beginning of the season.

Edit: Doesn’t look like they play them this year.

update

last season (14U AAA) : 52 goals, 106 points in 56 games
last season (NAPHL 14U AAA) : 6 goals, 6 points in 3 games
last season (John Reid, Nationals, WSI U15) :12 goals, 27 points in 17 games
-----------------------------
70 goals, 139 points in 76 games

this season (18U AAA) : 1 goal, 2 points in 3 games
this season (WSI U15) : 3 goals, 6 points in 4 games

other info : remains as among top prospects for the 2026 NHL Entry Draft

He's having a good season, but not compared to the best players to play for Shattuck over the years. Crosby was over 2X the amounts of PPG at the same age, Celebrini is nearly 2X the amount of PPG at the same age, and he's way behind someone like Eiserman too.

Isn't he 5'9? I'm sure he'll be an NTDP player and probably an NHL draft pick, but it doesn't seem like he's going towards a favorite for 1OA in 2026 by virtue of playing U18 for Shattuck this year.

He was excellent at the YOG. Lock for the NTDP. Talented all around player. Lots of skill, lots of effort, plays every foot of the ice. Stylistically reminds me of Alex Turcotte as a junior. Hopefully he's got some more growth in him.

Doesn’t skate like Turcotte. That’s my worry with Berchild. He’s very good though. The best of the YOG American team for me.

Thomas Bordeleau maybe with a better motor. The dreaded Jake Wise comparison. There’s some Cullen Potter without the skating and puck handling to that same crazy level.

He needs to grow taller and improve his skating.

Edit: Best comparison is Marco Rossi or Gavin Brindley.

Top 3 for 2026?
It's probably too early to know, but that would seem a little high for what his game is.

He needs to improve his skating and grow taller for that to even be a consideration. He has the type of game where you can probably assume that absent significant injuries or off-ice issues that he'll be a first round pick, but a 5'9 center with average skating for 5'9 probably isn't a player who has a top 3 overall profile.
