If anyone is curious he won't be playing for Shawinigan this season, at least based on their preseason roster. They have two other Euros on the roster. It's unclear where he'll go as he's not currently on an ELC. Maybe Hartford (AHL) or Cincinnati (ECHL), the Rangers' two minor league affiliates.

Where did you see that he will be the import player traded or released?

Seeing as he was the player obtained in the trade, I'd assume it was one of the other two that are eventually moved.

Shawinigan released their roster, and Barbashev wasn't on it--while Braillard and Klima were.

There was no formal announcement, but not being on the roster seems like a pretty solid indication he won't be around.

That seems like really bad asset management to trade for a player you don't have space for.
Certainly seems odd. Like there's more to it, maybe.

One possibility is that since this trade was actually agreed to in June (though executed in August), before the import draft, that Shawinigan ended up with a player they liked so much in Klima that they were willing to let Barbashev go. And then they had a month after initially acquiring him but maybe couldn't move him again because he counts as an overage player and an import and it's tough to take up both slots.

Who knows. Will be interesting to see where he lands.

Well, they had space when they traded for Barbashev. Of the two Swiss imports Shawinigan had last season, Leo Braillard was always gonna stay but Lorenzo Canonica was not. So Shawinigan was very much in need of a 2nd import when the trade was rumored (and probably also agreed on) in June or even earlier.

I'm no expert but in my view Barbashev is just a victim of the ChL's rather strict import and age rules. So when Shawinigan was able to draft (and get to commit) Jiri Klima in the import draft, Barbashev was the odd man out. Shawinigan is a rebuilding team and might need another year to chase the Memorial cup so Klima just fits their time line better. It also allows the team to play another overager.

The same thing happened to a third Swiss import who played for Shawinigan last season. Shawinigan traded with Val-d'Or for Louis Robin but released him after just 7 games (and 6 points) because they were able to sign his two years younger countryman Leo Braillard.

Sounds cruel but as an import you have to be really good and fit into a team's plans to stick around in the CHL as an overager.

I can't remember the last time I've seen something this stupid in hockey. Shawinigan waives Braillard to replace him with an overager just to then trade that overager for a player the same age as Braillard but significanly worse. All of that they did for a pick upgrade from 3rd to 2nd round. Totally worth ruining an entire season for such a mighty upgrade.

With Braillard they won 5 of 7, without him they won 3 of 15 games...and I doubt they're gonna be a better team based on this trade. Yeah, Sprynar is gonna be around next season but the same goes for Braillard.

Not signed by the Rangers (no surprise). Is he worth using an import AND overage spot for a CHL team or as a 2003 is he too old?

Any word on where he plays next?

Unless the CHL changed its rules (which is extremely unlikely to ever happen and I haven't heard of such plans either) he's gonna be too old. Barbashev just played his overager season and you only get one in the CHL.

Thanks. I read his age wrong.
