yeah at this point in his draft year I'd say he's quite clearly the best prospect from sask since I've been scouting back to the 04's birth year. I don't have him on Bedard or Dupont level but would put him close to McKenna for 3rd best and over guys like Savoie/Geekie/Yager/Heidt/Catton/Rudolph/Preston/Cripps/etc. We'll see how he adjusts to the WHL and eventually pro hockey but he's already too good for AAA at 14.

Now that we are more than halfway through the season. Can we say that he has improved dramatically from last year and that he is simply on another level compared to Catton, Yager, Heidt?
Which NHL player would you compare him to stylistically?
Among exceptional players would you say he is a projected talent at Misa level? or an intermediary between Misa and Bedard?

Yeah he just keeps improving at a surprising rate and best sask prospect I've seen. I grew up playing against Brayden Schenn and they seem very similar in play style, Schultz skill level is just way better. We'll see how he looks in the WHL but I'd expect a Misa level prospect

He confirmed today that he is not applying for exceptional status. But he is eligible to play 34 games in the WHL next season because he was granted an exception to play U18 as an underager, so whoever drafts him 1st overall will get to use him for half the year anyway.

Where did he confirm this, and why?
 
I can understand that it might not be good off the ice. I got no insight into that and respect whatever decision he makes there, but on the ice? How does it help him to play against worst competition for more games? Does anyone seriously believe he’ll struggle next year in the WHL?

There might be some angle to this to try to get himself to Regina rather than Edmonton, that would be the only logical explanation I could come to. He eluded to that in the article I saw

He is already dominating his league even more so than a really good Giants prospect (Blake Chorney) who is a year older and will be in the WHL full time next year.

that being said maybe he takes the Saovie route and gets picked by Regina where it's easier for him to play more games in the dub without asking for exceptional status.

Oil Kings have the picks of the Thunderbirds and Warriors both last in their conferences, imagine if they get the two kids Schultz and Pue at first and second, with the good team they already have it would be insane.

I believe he used this as a way to try to get to Regina, because he is already too good for the u18 and there is no point in going back. But I also understand the logic of not wanting to have the "responsibility" of living with exceptional status, especially now that it is possible to play half the season in the WHL, I think he sees that half is enough to familiarize himself and not affect his development.

Finished with 93 points in 44 games to lead the league in scoring as a 14-year old. This is 21 points more than the previous record for a 14-year old in the Sask U18 league (Alex Forsberg with 72 in 2009-2010). Brayden Yager and Riley Heidt scored 42 and 37 points, respectively, in the same league at the same age.

By comparison, some of the top 15-year old scorers (i.e. those playing a year older than Schultz) in the last decade were: Dayne Beuker (83), Cole Sillinger (76), Cole Reschny (65), Dillon Dube (63) and Roger McQueen (61).

In fact, 93 points is the most by any player in the league since 2008-2009.

What I find most bizarre about this kid is that he has been steadily improving at a breakneck pace. He went from 2.25ppg at age 12 to 4.96ppg at age 13 in bantam. He entered the under-18s at age 14 and opened the season with 19+22 in 21 (1.95ppg pace) games and finished with 24+28 in 23 (2.26 pace).
 
Can he play 34 games next year in the WHL and a few more at the end of the season when the u18 season ends? That would be around 40/50 games.
What are the expectations for the WHL next year? ppg+?

Yeah, he can play 34 games. I'm sure he's desperately hoping to be drafted by Regina, as I think he's not quite ready to move too far from home. I think if he goes to REG, he'll be at training camp, play a game or two, go back down to the SMAAAHL, then play the back half of the WHL season + playoffs. I think he'll be a PPG player by the time his rookie season is nearing completion.
