Liam Pue is the main challenger but Schultz is the pretty clear cut #1 this year. Only unknown is if he gets exceptional status or not
Thanks for the info, I’ve heard of Pue as well but wasn’t sure if he was a challenger for first overall.

Even if he doesn't make it (I think he will) I saw somewhere that because he received exceptional status to play in the SMAAAHL he will be able to play 34 games in the WHL next year. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes that is correct.

  • If one of the four Members participating in the pilot has granted a 12-, 13- or 14-year-old player special status to play in an advanced age category, any such player must be evaluated to ensure they currently meet and are deemed to continue with special player status in their 15-year-old year to qualify and continue to be eligible to play up to 34 games in the WHL.

That doesn’t apply to the JPHL, right? So Liam pue couldn’t play 34 games next year?

The WCDM working group consists of representatives from BC Hockey, the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, the Pacific Junior Hockey League, Hockey Alberta, the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Hockey Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Hockey Manitoba, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and the WHL.

If he's not in those leagues, I guess not.

What’s the odds Schultz AND Pue get exceptional status?

Don’t believe there’s ever been 2 in the same year?

Nope, two have never gotten it same year, however:

3 applied for WHL in 2020, Brayden Yager, Riley Heidt and Connor Bedard, but only Bedard got it.

In 2023 - 2 applied in the OHL in William Moore and Ryan Roobroeck but neither made the cut.

I have no idea, I just know that Pue and Schultz are considered the best out west with neither clear cut ahead of the other

Pue is good, but he has scored much less so far in a worse league and he is a winger. Schultz is clearly No. 1 in the class.

I believe they will both request it, but only Schultz will be granted it.

6-6-12 in 4GP, tied for the tournament lead in points, one of only 2 2010s in the tournament, making him one of the youngest players at the event.

EDIT: I did a more thorough check, and there are a total of 5 2010's in the tournament, 3 of whom are playing for Northern Alberta Xtreme. The others are F Teagen Bouchard, D Nolan Wolitski, G Karter Gibson, and D Thor Liffiton.

What is the deadline to request exceptional status? I saw somewhere that it's only until the 31st (today, in this case).
He's "hiding" the game about whether he'll ask, but I doubt he won't.

For those who have been following, how does Schultz compare to McDavid, Bedard, Tavares, Misa, Wright, Veleno in their 14-year seasons ?

The deadline to apply is December 1, so assuming he applied, he did so before then.

As for players reaching exceptional status in the CHL, the system requires a $1,000 payment and a declaration of intention by December 1. Then CHL and Hockey Canada scouts go to work, determining if the player has the ability to play at the highest level of junior hockey while being five years younger than their opponents in some cases.

It’s hard to know until he gets to junior, especially in a league so isolated from extra-provincial competition as the SMAAA18. @landy92mack29 seems to think that he was better than Heidt, Yager, Catton, and the other recent top Sask players at the same age
