F Liam Pue - Langley Hockey Academy, JPHL U18 (2028 Draft)

Schultz #1 in WHL draft. Would’ve been exceptional status but for once the family decided against it.

Edmonton went a little off board with #2 pick with Cruz Jim and Liam Pue there and picked Holden Wouters but he’s still good.

Was then gonna be Kelowna who is hosting next mem cup #3 overall but they traded pick to Regina so Regina got the 1 and 3 pick

Picked Liam Pue #3, and he would’ve been #1 lots of other years. He actually applied for exceptional status but Schultz is better and didn’t want it so Pue didn’t get it

WHL trades are nuts
U16 season wasn't really great. All the recent number 1s were better than him.

Guy played as a U15 in a U18 circuit and was 1st in goals and 2nd in point scoring league wide. He did more than okay id say. JPHL U18 level compared to Sask U18AAA is meh tho.

I think Schultz level numbers are what should have been expected at minimum in his league since it’s widely regarded as lesser than every western top AAA league.

The JPHL is a much weaker league. You'd have to go back to 2014 for him to maybe have a chance to go 1st overall
Wasn’t he trying to get ES though? That’s where I’m confused.

If he’s not good enough to be first overall in the years of no Bedard/mckenna/schultz then why try for ES? Regardless I’m sure he ends up being great in the dub

He played U18. 50 pts in 29 games. Had similar numbers to berkly catton in u15 and u18 and catton went #1 in 2022. Should put up the points.
Catton's U15 year was the year that was wiped out by Covid.

The JPHL is a much weaker local league than the SMAAAHL.

If you have a doubt, take theses lists :

Best players in SMAAHL 2020/21 : Yager, Heidt, Lind, Price, Howe...
Best players in JPHL 2024/2025 : Laraque

Not my point again. Just about how Pue was trying for ES. I think it’s pretty funny that he would be trying for that if he’s not that great.

Obviously he’d never get it with Schultz or McKenna or Bedard draft years but what about years like Guenther, Catton, Rudolph etc not to say those are bad players just not as good as schultz is projected to be and then obviously mckenna and Bedard.

If he wouldn’t even go #1 for the Rudolph year why would he ever try for ES. Would be another sean day situation where Sean day wasn’t even a top 2 pick his draft year(drafted #3 overall) but he got exceptional status.

Currently leading his team in scoring at the WSI.
Probably a lot more indicative of his talent level than JPHL. A lot of really good players have come through WSI.
Next 2 scorers on that team are:
Thompson who was #2 pick in yesterday's US prospects draft
Nicol who went #5 to Everett in today's draft
Him and Schultz are gonna light up the scoreboard at least, not sure of his overall game (compared to Shultz who's a great 2 way player already)

So strong that he wasn't even taken 2nd

Cameron Kuzma 5 points in 2 games in JPHL at U15 ; 31 points in 37 games in SMAAAHL at U16.

If he was that strong, he would have outclassed Marcus Laraque.

So where would you have had Pue then in the draft? And after what players?

Anyone can apply for ES. It's up to the league and Hockey Canada to decide if they deserve it or not. Most of the time they make the right decision.

Heidt and Yager were denied ES the same year as Bedard got it.

McKenna's family decided to not apply. Same with Schultz. Not a big deal if a kid gets it or not at this level.

Sean Day they gave it to because 1. They were afraid he would play in the USHL 2. They didn't really have clear guidelines to determine what an ES really means. Now that they have way more experience, it's handed out a bit less.

Same with Schultz.
Schultz didn’t apply but that’s because he already knew the WHL was changing the rules so he’d be allowed to play half a season anyway. The same goes for Pue, by the way, as he is also coming in as an exceptional-status player from a lower level.

Pue applied though. Schultz didn't.
