He's good size, great skater and stickhandler, his IQ isn't bad either. I think he has chances to become a solid bottom 6 center.
He is about to turn 22 and still in the VHL... He might become that but not in the NHL.

Almost like the reason might matter?
Does it, from his career's standpoint? What are you saying? Since he is lagging behind in development due to a significant injury and not some other reason he is going to be fine being forward? Missing that year means nothing?

That's the whole issue. Sure the injury is the reason why he is still in the VHL but how does it make it any better for his NHL hopes?

Hes really not that old. Could come over when he’s 23 or 24 and ready and push for a spot (KHL season or two). I don’t see the rush.

He was a 7th round pick. The fact he’s garnered this much discussion is probably a win.

Aren't we saying the same thing? Just you focus on the reason, and I do on the outcome.

Not at all. You mean he's missed the whole season and all the chances to become an NHLer, and I mean, he missed a full season, but has not just fully recovered, but got back to his best form, and look at the result.

Now he'll play a few seasons in the KHL, if not for SKA then for Sochi or Admiral where he gets a lot of TOI and opportunites to get used to new level of hockey. And then it's pretty possible that he'll make the NHL.

He kinda reminds me Barabanov, just bigger and playing more important role by NA standarts.

It's not about the rush, it's about the fact that he needs to take two huge steps in the level of quality (KHL and NHL) and develop the relevant skillsets for those levels as currently, other than his size and play around the net (which is very unlikely to be a large part of his tasks at the NHL level) he doesn't possess any outstanding skills for the next level.

Tankov was absolutely a great pick for a 7th round but that's what I'm trying to discuss, how realistic is it to see a 7th round pick with a career derailed by injuries at the NHL level. And how much of an encouraging sign him going on a month-long heater in the VHL after a so-so season there really is.

It is possible as much as "anything is possible". I agree with the development plan you laid out but its outcome is anything but certain. What skills does he really possess to be successful at the next level?

Skating is Barabanov's biggest strength, in Tankov's case it might be an issue at the KHL level, never mind the NHL. Skating is his asset only in terms that combined with his size he's difficult to stop at high speed. Other than that, his overall mobility is fairly mediocre which is, most likely, what kept him in the VHL to this day. To call it "great" is an exaggeration. Even if you see just his scoring highlights most of them have the "man against boys" vibe which is notoriously difficult to make work at the higher level.

I do believe he will be a successful KHLer due to his size and scoring instincts, to me his best comparable, of those somewhat relevant to the NHL, is Plotnikov. And it's just very difficult to see how would that convert to anything useful at the NHL level.

It delays his hopes by one year. Seems like common sense that doesn't need to be hashed out. He does not appear to be less of a prospect because of it, just a year older. What point are you trying to make? How does it make his hopes worse? Did he stop developing?
