Per Grand Forks Herald's Brad Schlossman (North Dakota and NCAA Hockey GOAT reporter), McKamey has accelerated so he's a junior this year and can commit to an NCAA program on August 1 when the recruiting window opens up. And thus, he'll play his draft year in the NCAA presuming he stays with that route.

I don’t know if he’s *that* talented. But good for him.

There's a lot of mixed reactions from both sides of the border about the potential decision. NCAA teams want to strengthen their teams (not necessarily developing NHL players). Having a bunch of 20+ players with tons of hockey experience would boost any college team. This totally hurts USports team that had access to those players exclusively. No idea why Hockey Canada and the CHL would accept such decision, with no obvious benefit to themselves.

And CHL players get free tuition to universities in Canada, will that change if those players end up getting scholarships to the States?

No prob. Time to catch some Grizzlies games! Bit of a surprise he didn't choose a local team but the Vees are the best team in the league.
Hockey Canada has no say in the matter. The only thing preventing CHL players from jumping to the NCAA right now are NCAA rules.
As far players thatve aged out of CHL why would HC want to stop them? U sports is where hockey careers go to die. Even current U students barely give a shit about U hockey.

Wonder if the parents are from the Cowichan Valley, or moved in from somewhere else? Also, what his marks are like. Might give a clue as to where he is looking to go to school.

That's not the point. The aged out CHLers aren't going to make hockey careers in college hockey either. Usports is pretty important to those that are playing, maybe not to you.

Looked great in preseason yesterday. Hattrick, was dangerous around the net all game. Plays PP1 already as well.

I suspect that the BCHL will be desperate to keep McKamey in the league, especially after granting him exceptional status, but I think there's a chance he joins the Royals, if not this year, then perhaps for next year, assuming that the CHL/NCAA rules change to allow him to maintain his NCAA eligibility even if he plays in the CHL. As a Royals fan, this would be absolutely amazing. A player of his caliber as a 2nd round pick is how a championship roster could be formed. This is pure speculation, mind you.

Well he can't join the Royals this year since he's an 09 and didn't get exceptional status from the CHL. I'd put a lottttttttt of money on him signing with Victoria in the offseason, however.

Edit: I forgot about the new rules surrounding players who play a level up as they progress through minor hockey. Because McKamey played U18 as an underager last year, there's a chance he could be allowed to play 34 games with the Royals this season when he signs.

Neutral Zone scouting just put out a short little scouting report on him:

Eli McKamey #11 (F, R, 5’10”, 174, Penticton Vees, 01/19/2009) – McKamey is an elite talent. As he becomes more comfortable at this level (which won’t take long), he will begin to jump off the page. That being said, he can do things that only high-end players can do. He is quick, with very good top-end speed, although he didn’t use it much on the attack, as he seemed to prefer distributing the puck. His puck skills are excellent, and his superior vision makes him very dangerous five-on-five, but even more so on the power play, where he is on the top unit. He is constantly scanning the ice, both before he receives the puck and while he has it. His playmaking ability all over the ice is excellent, and he is more than willing to make plays in very tight quarters as well. Grade: B+
