Misa/Schaefer/Martin.

I just love how undisciplined Martin plays, always making smart plays, super unselfish, and is willing to do literally anything to help his team. All the tools are there to be a top-6 player in the NHL. Numbers don’t tell the whole story with Martin. He’s a stud. Similar to Bo Horvat in his draft season.
Porter Martone has 31 more points in 1 less game than Martin.

I get thinking Martin is underrated. I do not get having him ahead of Martone.

He’s also the better team, and is a full development year ahead of Martin.

To oversimplify why I hold Martin above, is I think he becomes a player similar to Bo Horvat in the pros. While Martone I think becomes a player similar to Lawson Crouse.

Horvat is infinitely more valuable.

Yes but Martone is a development season ahead of Martin.

As an '06 he's in his 3rd OHL season, while '07 born Martin is only in his 2nd OHL season.

Martone had 71 points in 60 games in the same development season as Martin is now, which is only slightly better in terms of PPG than Martin's 48 points in 43 games.

Fortunately for Martone he got an extra year to impress the scouts compared to most of his fellow '06 borns due to his birthday falling after the Sep 15 cutoff, and has taken a massive step forward that will get him drafted higher, justifiably so.

I think the Martone being similar to Crouse comments aren't going to age well and if the Canucks keep their first rounder I'd be happy to see them pick Martin and I think Martone will be long drafted by then.

I absolutely love Martin’s game and he’s going to be a steal I am 100% sure of that but to say right now he is the 3rd best player in Ontario over martone is one hell of a take if I’ve ever seen one.

I think he’s the 4th best behind Schaefer then Misa, then martone.

Better than O’Brien (but O’Briens hockey IQ is what separates him from the rest of the guys I think he has the best hockey IQ out of Ontario this year.)

also obviously better than Spence. Not sure what everyone sees with Spence I haven’t seen anything special personally.

I’m personally not that big of a fan of Martone, he’s a top 10 prospect but I think I’d have Martin/Hagens/Schaefer/Desnoyers/Misa/Mrtka/Smith/Frondell/Eklund ahead right now then he’s in that next tier for me. I just get visions of Lawson Crouse from Martone, he’ll be a solid pro, but not a guy you can build around like I think Martin will be. He just makes too many questionable decisions on the ice and can be a detriment to his team at times
As a guy who watched Crouse for 3 years in kingston. Crouse may be the worst comparison I have seen for Martone. Not even close. No offence but you clearly didn’t watch crouse in junior.

Crouse was very good 2 way, super hard working, huge checker, leadership, would fight etc, amazing penalty killer and an NHL level shot from 16 (announcers used to comment on it) had the nickname “The Sheriff” before Habs fans stole it and put it on Xhekaj

The Matt Tkachuk comparison is a perfect comparison for martone. People can say Tkachuk was better or whatever in junior but not sure if there’s any truth to that. Tkachuk when he was in London for the 1 year was on one of the best junior lines I’ve ever seen with Marner and Dvorak. Martone is probably the same skill level as Tkachuk and has a lot of similarities playing wise. Teammates aren’t as good as marner and Dvorak. Just check out the 3 of their stats in both the OHL reg season, playoffs and mem cup. Unstoppable.

The highlight reel moves, the odd nice check, stirring it up with the other teams, both very very skilled and hard working, decent 2 way game at this level, same size obviously. Way better comparison.

Martin I'm hoping Montreal takes him with Flames pick. He'd be good 3rd line center for Habs.

I tuned in to yesterday's game for a bit and caught a bad giveaway that directly led to a goal against.
I'm not knocking him, but that stood out.

Agreed. People are so lazy with comparison...
@LeProspector

Lawson Crouse was viewed prior to the draft as the coach dream player. Big, fast skater, hard worker and some talent. Labelled a safe prospect and way overdrafted because of his tools and attitude but he lacked offensive production.

Martone is not at all like Crouse. He has nice, hands, vision, creativity, offensive talent what he lacks is moving his feet and skating overall. He is less safe than Crouse but in another level in term of talent. His comparison is more like Matthew Tkachuk or Corey Perry

Just because you don’t agree with the comparison, doesn’t make it lazy.

I think Martone is going to struggle to create his own offence at higher levels, I think he lacks the consistency generating offence front beyond the net front to be a genuine scoring threat in the offensive zone. Crouse is in a similar position and he, unlike Martone has the speed to be dangerous in transition.

At his peak Martone will be a top-6 guy but I see more of a complementary guy like Crouse or a Kunitz.

Where as Brady Martin, I see similar to Bo Horvat who can be a guy that creates for himself and his teammates on occasion - but is a guy better suited for a 2C role that has great intangibles and work ethic.

I don’t think Martone reaches close to what Perry or Tkachuk are/was. I respect your opinion, but I disagree.

I’m a very big fan of Martin and I can see why someone would put them in their top-10. I think Martone vs Martin is closer than some think. Most would give Martone the edge for sure but there is legitimate momentum for Martin.

I can see the argument for both sides and ask me on different days and I’ll have different answers. I really like the Horvat comparison for Martin though. Might just use that.

I watched that game too, I was hoping to see Martin and O'Brien both show out and both had awful games IMO. O'Brien also had a turnover that led directly to a goal on a PP drop pass, immediately after getting the puck back from another turnover on the same type of pass. Martin played huge minutes but generated very little and O'Brien basically never touched the puck (though he did have a few really nice passes when he did).

I've seen 6 Martin games so far and I have to be honest I've been a little underwhelmed. His physicality and tenacity are impressive and he has a very heavy shot but in the games I've seen he just doesn't seem to generate much offense. It's a small sample size so it could be that I've just caught bad games but I haven't seen what everyone else likes about him so much yet.

I've read that the knock on Martin is his skating. Will that be a problem at the next level?
