So just to summarize he declined his QO before the story broke, and then they didn't come to an agreement. But won't Ottawa need to offer him another QO next summer? I doubt this will be resolved by then. So Ottawa can either offer him a QO or let him walk? Rock/hard place.

Just sign him to his QO. They should have just done what the swiss team did. Just another major Dorion Blunder. The craziest thing about all of this was giving away Connor Brown not knowing if they would sign Formenton. New ownership cant come soon enough.

Interesting in their release they talk about the investigation. L'HCAP ingaggia Alex Formenton

HCAP signs Alex Formenton

The Ambrì-Piotta Hockey Club is pleased to announce the signing of forward Alex Formenton until the end of the 2022/2023 season.

A second-round pick by the Ottawa Senators in 2017, Alex has collected 39 points in 109 NHL appearances in his career. Last season, born in '99, he scored 18 goals and 14 assists in 78 appearances for the Canadian franchise. Internationally, Formenton captured a gold medal at the 2018 U20 World Cup, helping Canada win with 4 points (2 goals and 2 assists) in 7 games.

The Canadian forward did not reach a contractual agreement with the Senators by the Dec. 1 deadline, as per the collective agreement between owners and players. Formenton therefore opted for a transfer to Europe and signed a contract with the Leventinese club, valid until the end of the 2022/2023 season.

The HCAP knows that the player and some of his teammates from Canada's U20 World Cup winners in 2018 were involved in a criminal investigation which resulted in a decree of abandonment. The investigation was recently reopened following revelations about the Canadian federation's practice in similar cases. The HCAP, after discussion with the player, who fully cooperated with all authorities during the investigations carried out by the London Police (Ontario, Canada), the NHL and the Canadian Hockey Federation, and his lawyers, believes that there is no any element not to assert the presumption of innocence against him. Should the new investigation by the Canadian police reveal elements that are currently unknown, the Club and the player have reserved the right to reevaluate their contractual relationship.

The biancoblù club welcomes Alex and wishes him full sporting success!

I actually agree, thinking about this, why didn't they just give him a cheap 1 year deal and say "we are aware of the allegations and should there be any merit we will act accordingly". Not sure why they froze him out.

Now they either have to offer him a QO next year when the case may still be ongoing or he walks. Big waste.

It certainly is a choice. Batherson is under investigation as well but he's been playing the entire year.

I think the situation here is different. Formenton is lying low. He's probably making less than his QO in Switzerland

The Sens never offered him a contract after the scandal came to light. He declined the qualifying offer right before the news broke and they never came back to him. You can't retroactively accept the offer. Why they didn't just offer him a minimum deal and put out a statement like this Swiss team did shows why they need a new GM.

I mean if he had a contract he would have played like the rest of the players. I was referring for what they should do next year if its not resolved and you are the sens.

The scandal broke in May 2022, QO's were extended/had to be accepted by the end of June.

The Senators extended the offer after they knew of the situation.

And I think the party that made the mistake was Formenton's agent. He made the bet that by December 1st, the players would be publicly cleared and/or this all would have blown over, and he'd then be able to get Formenton a multi-year raise from Ottawa or another team.

He bet wrong. Ottawa didn't offer a contract after the QO, and no other team had interest in trading for him. (Ottawa was reportedly just asking for a 2nd/3rd round draft pick in return)

If he had signed the QO, Formenton would be playing in the NHL just like all the other players from that junior team. Had he put up good numbers, he could have tried at a longer extension next summer. Now, he'll likely have to settle for a 1-year deal at a similar amount to the QO that was extended this summer.

i think if he signed, he would have gotten suspended. They loan him to Europe.
