F Adam Sykora - Hartford Wolf Pack, AHL (2022, 63rd, NYR)

He was drafted because of Tyler Motte. Rangers and Rangers fans were extremely happy with Motte’s contributions after trade. Hard to think that getting the next Tyler Motte type through the draft wasn’t a huge consideration with this pick. Vancouver fans also know exactly what I mean.

Omg shut up.

Not surprised at all that he already signed his ELC.
What was surprising that he wasn't drafted in the 1st round.

He was one of the most exiting players to watch at the last Worlds
every time he jumped in, he did something.

His effort level is just of the charts, for his size, he is really strong
and physical as well, skating is top notch as well

Adam Sýkora is the 2nd fastest Rangers prospect to receive an ELC in the salary cap era, behind only Alexis Lafrenière.

Sýkora is the first player in Rangers history to be eligible for a $950,000 ELC with an $82,500 minor league salary. Waiting for details to be confirmed.

Sýkora isn't AHL eligible in 2022-23 unless released

Am I reading this correct that this means he is returning to Nitra for the season, unless Nitra agree to let him go to a minor league team in North America?

Yes. The ELC only gives the Rangers the power to have him in the NHL.

For AHL or WHL (He was drafted 1st overall in the OHL Import draft by Medicine Hat Tigers) he needs permission from HK Nitra as he is still under contract.

Ok I think the odds are then 90% he stays in Nitra for the season, which is also what he wanted. He will likely get 1st or 2nd line icetime there, in a mens pro league that has been great for development lately.

Why is everyone acting like Sykora is the first player to ever be selected in the import draft and/or NHL draft while still under contract in Europe? Many if not most Europeans have North American out-clauses in their contracts, often not just for specific leagues but all leagues. I’m sure Sykora is the same and that’s why he went 1st overall in the import draft. If he wasn’t close to a lock to go to Medicine Hat, they wouldn’t have picked him 1st overall. Could’ve taken a swing at an even better player if that was all they were doing.

Slovak here, on a NHL team he's a 3-4th liner, extremely good forechecker and backskater, huge enthusiasm and energy every shift.
He can probably also be an “enabler” on a scoring line a la Jesper Fast.

Top 6 talent is available late in drafts, but it’s incredibly hit or miss trying to identify and develop it. I have zero issue honing in on a kid with a specific skillset that is basically guaranteed translatable to an NHL bottom six when you start hitting round 3 or so. When those guys develop at a better clip than expected, that’s how you end up with a Marchand or a Point.

Very happy with this pick. Surprised he lasted as long as he did.

Medicine Hat drafted him 1st which basically means they were 100% sure he is coming. They might be misleaded. He can get very good icetime in Nitra, so it would be better for him to stay. But Nitra cannot really force him to stay. No Slovak team wants to release their top prospects to CHL, but they cannot really stop them if they are decided to go.

I believe Sykora mentioned that he was in touch with several CHL teams pre-draft, but that Medicine Hat was not one of them.

Nitra received a good return in USD for Sykora. So, from that point, the goal is reached.
Now they want to focus to other young guys, that they can "sell" in the future year. That means, no need to hold Sykora in Nitra. He can go even to WHL.

Just read his interview and he slightly prefers Nitra. Also for Nitra, he is a cheap solution for 2nd line. They lost quite a lot of firepower in Buček or Krivošík.

if he actually plays second line minutes; i'd rather he stay in Nitra tbh; it would be better for his development (assuming the other option is junior leagues in Canada).

Totally agree, it is good for all three. Sykora, Nitra and Rangers.

I'm really happy for this kid. Last summer before HGC he wasn't even considered a draft prospect. But the progress he's made, the way he's progressed every month is unbelievable and I've never seen that in a Slovak prospect before. When I started the thread in Nov 2021, I thought he might be in the second half of the draft, but he really came on strong at the end of the season and the 2nd round is a great result of his year-long work. And thanks to his personality and character I think he will make it to the NHL. He probably won't be more than a bottom 6 player, but I think he could have a long career. He's a real hard worker. Love his energetic play.
