Trouba is mandatory protection too. It just doesn't show up on the front Rangers page of Cap Friendly but if you go on Trouba's page it does.

Ah, makes sense. Either way, he would always be protected regardless of a NMC or not.

The reason it doesn't show up on the front page, is because he doesn't have a NMC this season, due to it being an RFA year. RFA years cannot be subject to clauses

Exempt: Kravtsov, Rykov, Reunanen, Shestyorkin, Kakko, Fox (anyone whose first NHL contract started on or after July 1st, 2019)
Mandatory protection: Zibanejad, Panarin*

That leaves 5 forwards, 3 defensemen and 1 goalie to protect.

Pending UFAs do not require protection even with a NMC. 2021 pending RFAs are under control, so they are seen as long-term assets (or at least past the 2021 off-season). Chytil, Lias, Howden, Buchnevich etc would need to be protected.

My guess for the protection list because of these factors, is this:

7 forwards: Panarin, Zibanejad, Buchnevich, Chytil, Andersson, Howden. 1 spot left for either Strome, Fast or Lemieux (assuming they are still on the team)
3 defensemen: Trouba, Skjei, DeAngelo
1 goalie: Georgiev

Exposure is easy. they can expose a guy like Hajek on defense, one of Lemieux/Fast/Strome and some minor league goalie who fits the criteria. Finding the players to expose is the easy part. It's determining who to protect, that is tricky for a lot of teams.

*The mandatory protection could be subject to change because NHL contracts aren't as clear on no-movement clauses as we may think. The Vegas expansion draft had players on NMCs not be automatically protected and then players who had a NTC were.

full credit where it is due
Amazing is Mr. Eagle Eye on this one.

The only goalie on the roster right now who would be eligible for expansion, AFAIK, is Georgiev. Huska is the next closest to being eligible, but I think because he only played 9 games in Hartford last season, it doesn't count towards eligibility.

Easily solvable by signing a depth vet, of course.

Examples:

Bobby Ryan had a NMC, did not have to be protected
Rick Nash had a NTC, but had to be protected

Official NHL expansion draft exempt list contains surprises - Sportsnet.ca
NMC language is finicky, especially when it's not a full NMC, which was the case for both Nash and Ryan when expansion came around.

No one on the Rangers right now, or during the expansion draft time, has this kind of situation of a combo (M)NTC/NMC. So shouldn't be an issue.

Even if it was, it would only be an issue if it is a player the team would otherwise prefer to expose. And I highly doubt they feel that way about Panarin, Zibanejad or Trouba in 2 years (those are the only ones with long-term deals who will be in their UFA-eligible years (which are eligible for clauses)

Agreed.

Even with some roster turnover in the few seasons leading up to expansion, it seems like the Rangers have a very clear protection path.
