The Kings would be allowed to protect the following combinations of players:

1 goalie, 5 defensemen, 9 forwards

So... who is on your must keep list, and (consequently) who is expendable?

Players who are exempt include first-year or second-year pros and unsigned draft choices. Only two players can be chosen from each team, and a team cannot lose both a defenseman and a goaltender.

Keep
Forwards: Kopitar, Brown, Richards, Carter, Gaborik, Williams, Stoll, Pearson, Toffoli
Defense: Doughty Voynov, Martinez, Muzzin, Green
Goalie: Quick

Expendables
Forwards: King, Lewis, Clifford, Nolan, Cracknell
Defense: Regehr, Schultz
Goalie: Jones

Maybe DL's plan all along was to leave Mike Richards unprotected in the expansion draft.

What'll be interesting to see (if true) is how many seasons it'll take to roll out the supposed 4 new expansion teams. I also can't see a league with 34 teams.

Forget 34 teams. That's just offensive.

I can see the league getting to 32. That's a perfect number that's divisible by the lowest prime number (2) and sets up a perfect playoff scenario where all 32 teams make it.

Why not? Then you can have players dropping dead on the ice after playing as much as 35 playoff games over 3 months.

By the time this actually happens, if it does, the make up of the team will have changed a lot and players thought in disposable might be up for consideration of not bring protected.

If it were this summer kingsfan81 has the right list.

As far as the legitimacy of the report, who knows but the way the divisions are laid out right now, you'd have to expect two more teams are on the horizon or they would've stuck to the old format when realigning.

It's tough to figure out without knowing when it's gonna happen. I wouldn't expect any new teams until 2016-17, if only to give teams a full offseason to maneuver their rosters.

Worst case scenario, the Kings can probably get a pick for somebody like Clifford if they don't have any protection spots.

Or if the Kings wanted to keep Jones, they could work out a side deal where one of the expansion clubs would take a defenseman. From the numerous Expansion Draft threads that popped up earlier this summer, goaltending was the one position that might be plentiful.

It seems inevitable, at the very least, that Seattle and Las Vegas will receive franchises to balance out the conferences. The only consolation is that an expansion draft wouldn't really be a big deal for the Kings in my opinion and could even be beneficial in freeing up some salary. Our prospect pool is deep enough, especially in bottom 6 and bottom pairing talent to withstand just about any blow. The only thing I can conceive of happening that would be a set back is losing Martin Jones, but not enough to go out of our way to protect him.

Even if it were to be announced TODAY, it wouldn't come into effect atleast until after the upcoming season. Things can change over the course of a season.

This.

For a topic like this, we would have to assume long-term deals for Williams and/or Martinez to have any idea what a Kings protected list would look like.

1 goalie, 5 defensemen, 9 forwards is pretty generous I feel. If it were to happen like right now, which it wouldn't, it'd definitely be a hit to the bottom lines but I think the Kings have the depth to manage. Next summer might be different, but right now I think we'd be okay.

What happens first, an NFL team in LA or another NHL expansion?

We still have yet to see a credible reporter confirming this news.

The NHL has expanded on three separate occasions since the Rams and Raiders moved (Nashville 1998, Atlanta 1999, and Minnesota and Columbus 2000), and three more "near miss" expansions (San Jose 1990, Tampa Bay and Ottawa 1992, and Anaheim and Florida 1993).

I think it's a safe bet we will see the NHL expand before we get an NFL team. I would say it's a fair bet this country will add a couple of states before we get an NFL team (Iraq, Afghanistan).

If we do get an NFL franchise, I don't want an expansion team. The Rams should come back to LA where they belong.

Wasn't it said to be after the 2015-16 season at the soonest? A new NHL-caliber arena will be done with construction by Spring 2016.

They can play in the Thomas and Mack for one season. I do believe that the current MGM arena is too small and not upgraded for an NHL team full-time.

And another thing. The NHL isn't going to confirm jack squat until it's official. They said until the nth hour that Atlanta wasn't moving. Well we all saw what happened there.
