About the most anti-climatic announcement. Zero surprises. I said earlier I expected them to protect Carrick.

So this might've been answered before but now that we have an Expansion Draft thread I might as well ask here: Is Francis able to ask Vegas to pick a specific player from another team in order to make a deal?

It's never been done before, unless it was a well kept secret all these years.

This brings to mind the delicious possibility of making a trade with Vegas to get them to pick a specific player just to **** another team over.

Like Anaheim with Manson. Pretty obvious they've got a deal set up to keep him out of Vegas. It would be hilarious to see the Kings swoop in with a better offer if Vegas goes ahead and takes him.

Yes. And I have to think that Francis is thinking if he's willing to trade a higher end talent (think Hanifin), he can read the exposed lists like a menu and possibly get several very good players.

Edit: I should say that "Vegas picked X to be traded to Y" will never be public as terms of a trade. You'll just see the player drafted in the Expansion Draft, and then you see an immediate trade. But those negotiations are entirely possible.

I'm sure that once GMGM commits to a deal, the league will enforce it. As I understand it, the trades with Vegas to protect players have already been made, they're just not announcing them until the draft itself. And regardless, a GM has to deal with other GMs in the long term- backstabbing like that, even when technically allowed, is spectacularly rare, because you and your team will instantly get a reputation around the league as entirely untrustworthy. And it would be deserved.

As for it never happening before, players worth trading for have never been exposed in expansion drafts before. The NHL is doing it differently this time because they want Vegas to be able to field a real team.

I wonder if we have a deal in place for them to take Lack/Nordstrom?

I don't think we have a deal in place as losing any one of those 4 assets wouldn't be a major blow on its own. Meaning that either Ward or Lack can play backup if the other gets taken so we might actually want a goaltender claimed and Stempniak/Nordstrom level assets are highly available on the market and in free agency. No need for Francis to make a deal as Vegas doesn't really have something that good to take from us. Stempniak is who they'll take.

Unless we get them to take Lack/Nordstrom as part of a larger deal to acquire Neal or whoever. Which might be a thing worth spending a little extra for so we can keep Stempy's scoring.

There's no asset available to Vegas that will motivate GMRF to make Hanifin available, imo.

Mrazek is the shocker of the day. Who saw that coming?

Well if Fleury is the goalie Vegas is taking, then Mrazek makes too much money to be your backup. Playing the odds a bit but I'm guessing they're pretty sure Mrazek isn't what Vegas wants.

Hanifin + PDG + 2nd for (Vatanen or Dumba) + Neal + Marchessault

If Vegas adds picking Nordstrom instead of Stempy, I'd do that. Yeah, we don't get the Duchene coming back, but three very good players ain't nothin' to sneeze at. Add two 30 goal forwards and we'd instantly have the offensive depth we've so desperately needed for years.

Goalies don't get a lot back in trade it seems. Might not be the best choice to stock pile them vs taking a player you would use every day.

Depends who the options are. Mrazek is worth a lot more than whatever other bum the Red Wings exposed, for example.

Good summary of available players over on the trade board.

I was poking to see what options there are for drafting one for each team. Doesn't seem to be anything yet, so for the sake of me trying to look at what their roster are, here are some guesses by taking one from each team

Josh Manson (ANA) D
Alexander Burmistrov (ARI) RW
Adam McQuaid (BOS) D
Zach Bogosian (BUF) D
Alex Chiasson (CAL) RW
Lee Stempniak (CAR) LW
Marcus Kruger (CHI) C
Mikhail Grigorenko (COL) C
Jack Johnson (CLB) D
Jamie Oleksiak (DAL) D
Petr Mrazek (DET) G
Griffin Reinhart (EDM) D
Jonathan Marchessault (FLO) C
Trevor Lewis (LA) C
Eric Staal (MIN) C
Charles Hudon (MON) LW
James Neal (NAS) LW
Beau Bennett (NJ) RW
Calvin de Haan (NYI) D
Brandon Pirri (NYR) C
Mark Borowiecki (OTT) D
Michael Raffl (PHI) LW
Marc-Andre Fleury (PIT) G
Mikkel Boedker (SAN) LW
Jordan Binnington (STL) G
Andrej Sustr (TAM) D
Antoine Bibeau (TOR) G
Brendan Gaunce (VAN) C
Nate Schmidt (WAS) D

Giving a lineup of....
Neal-Staal-Burmistrov
Marchessault-Grigorenko-Chiasson
Stempniak-Kruger-Raffl
Boedker-Lewis-Bennett

Manson-Bogosian
Johnson-Sustr
de Haan-McQuaid

MAF
Mrazek

Farm/trade bait/pressbox
----------
Hudon-Gaunce-Pirri

Borowiecki-Schmidt
Reinhart-Oleksiak

Binnington
Bibeau

Certainly surplus of dmen available. Could do well to trade a couple of them for a 2nd line RW (or sign one...).

Well they need warm bodies to play the games, and Ouellette is a pretty decent young defenseman. Sheahan is a big strong lower six center they could use. Mrazek being flipped for a second round pick and maybe a middling prospect may not be an improvement for Vegas.

The bones of their team the next two years is coming from this draft. Not every situation can be used to broker more picks out of teams. They're already getting two or three extra first rounders out of this.

As for that mock lineup, I don't think there's any way Manson is available. Or that the Columbus pick isn't Calvert or Karlson.

nevermind, got beaten to it

Some of that list is wack though. Why would they take Pirri instead of Grabner from the Rangers?

Schmidt as 7th or 8th D on VGK if they take him? I dont think so.

Speaking about Canes, this is what we expected. Bye Stempniak, I did like you, all the best for you.
