Exit Interviews

The fact that Cronin is being interviewed is confirmation he’ll be back. I remember after 22-23 the Ducks didn’t do them specifically because PV didn’t want Eakins to have to answer questions when he wasn’t being brought back

Okay I'm sure this is a dumb question, but... what are exit interviews, exactly?

It seems like every season people (and it doesn't seem fanbase specific) act like the interviews are a source of honest player feedback that they would never be willing/able to give during the season, then every season they're just the usual media speak with an added "what are you doing this summer?" angle. Is that always fan hopium, or is it just that most of what's happening here is also behind the scenes?
Like, if the Ducks really cancelled all exit interviews in 22-23 just to avoid Eakins having to answer questions after being let go, that seems dumb on multiple levels. Players can still give feedback on other things. Plus you'd think guys who aren't coming back (whether a coach or a player) would have the most freedom to be honest in their feedback, which seems valuable in itself. But not trotting him out in front of reporters does make sense.

So is there a management phase and a media phase, so to speak? Or is it really just an overhyped mini media day?

I would think there are closed door interviews between the players and Pat, i'd hope so at least. But yeah these interviews with the media though are no different than the post-game/pre-game fluff you hear throughout the season.

Allow me to present a scenario:

Step 1: McTavish signs an offer sheet somewhere else and Verbeek decides not to match.
Step 2: I take an Uber to Honda Center, sneak in, stand alone under the spotlight at center ice.
Step 3: Every orifice in my body simultaneously opens and produces its assigned fluid.
Step 4: A beat.
Step 5: I spontaneously combust.

The only things I find interesting about exit interviews are a coach being fired and revealing an injury that a player has been struggling with

Hopefully Leo is going to play in the WC, and with a bigger role. 4Nations did wonders for him.
If you go to the international tournaments section of the forums, there are national team threads for the WC. I have popped in to read them, and have seen that the Sweden one has people posting potential line ups and what not, which is fun to read.

If that's the case it'll be very interesting to hear what Verbeek has to say.
The issue is we don’t have press that will push him for answers. I wish we had a press core threat would tell him to his face all the metrics show the team was only improved in the standings because of goaltending. I would love to hear what spin he would put in that.

For this Ducks team, I would imagine Pat will talk about the season and ask each player about certain areas of his game. Give the player direction on where he thinks the player should focus on improving. Things to address during the off season and conditioning.

We probably don’t have a lot of mgmt-player hostility, but I would expect the vets to be more open about what they see as coaching issues.

If Verbeek has any ability to piece together the overall sentiment of the players, when he sits down with Cronin, there will be some direction for next year. You have to believe Verbeek is calling a lot of the shots and he’ll talk about what adjustments need to be made.

Hopefully the PK/PP assistants will be gone. If PV doesn’t already have a plan on that I’d be surprised.

I do think Cronin will be given a points/standings goal for next year as part of any basis for going forward beyond 25-26. If the team doesn’t get to the playoffs or are not within a win or two, it will probably be Cronin’s last year.

I think when people talk about exit interviews, they might mean different things. The ones that matter are those that take place between the individual players and coaching staff and/or management. That's what I usually mean if I say I'm interested in exit interviews. We obviously will never be privy to what takes place during those, but it's crucial as far as coaching/management giving the player an evaluation on the year's performance and what they expect them to improve on. And I would hope the feedback would go the other way as well.

The media and the public as a whole though sometimes mean the players talking to the media on their way out, which are just garbage as far as information other than maybe finding out if a guy has been hurt, or what his plans are for the offseason.

It would be concerning to me if Verbeek learned anything new about the coaches from these exit interviews. A good GM should keep track during the season of how things are going. I want the coaching staff gone, but doubt if anything in these interviews will be a determining factor.

I wouldn't be concerned by that. There are things a player might say after the season he wouldn't say during the season about his feelings on the coaching staff. So if there's an overwhelming amount of anti-Cronin sentiment, that could be impetus for a change. I don't expect that, but I don't think it would be a sign of the GM not doing his job.
