Honestly though, in a best on best, not everyone is gonna look like the studs they are. Lots of talent matching will negate skills that are more readily apparent against weaker competition. In an All Star game all these guys look like studs cause defense is an afterthought at best.

That's fine but you can't afford to make any mistakes, Toews has been invisible (offensively) but you haven't seen him make any defensive mistakes.

I agree with this, not that I know if it will matter but I'm glad that Team Sweden have guys on the 3rd/4th line that are used to playing on the 3rd/4th line on their teams and are good at it becuase then they know what to do with the icetime they get. Not that I wouldn't love for us to have a lineup like Canada's but there is always a risk when you have a lot of superstars that are used to being "the guy" for their team and now they suddenly aren't and will try to do what they usually do in 15-20 minutes in under 10 minutes which can be tough.

Canada should be fine though. Getzlaf and Bergeron are great at defense (especially the latter), Perry does get PK time with Anaheim so he's no slouch.

I don't want to speak for USA's other players but Kesler slots in perfectly to that bottom 6 as a defensive specialist. He was Selke nominated for a reason and his defensive ability will be a big boon. Sweden is gonna like the defensive contribution from Silfverberg I would think.

All I'm saying is there are guys who can reasonably shift their roles but overall you're right. Some guys are just used to being THE guy and when they get cancelled out they look a lot worse than they are. And in that, it's a little tough to measure their usefulness but they're probably having a good effect on neutralizing guys on the other team. Idk. It's an interesting dynamic
