Why someone felt the need to analyze this through numbers and graphs is beyond me.

Do these bloggers believe no one understands hockey, and that numbers explain things the eye can't see? It's very patronizing having these people get "air time/writing space".

My nana can tell the Leafs are wildly inconsistent. Anybody who's ever watched the Leafs have known this for years.

What exactly is your problem with someone actually doing the work and trying to figure out if their eye test and the numbers are matching up?

It's utterly ridiculous and pointless. The whole genre is. And the people that tend to support it are. Like seriously, someone felt the need to use numbers? C'mon man. What the hell results was he expecting to see? The Leafs are actually the definition of consistency? f*** me.

Hate to break it to you, but you're not so smart to always be right.
It's not a case of people smart. It's a case of having a somewhat minimal functioning brain. The analytics crowd like to think this analysis is smart and unearths previously unknown information. Just watch the games (not you). You'll come to the same conclusion. (Sans thinking Cody Ceci is useful).

For years?? Over the years the team and players change, so you can't argue that they've been inconsistent for years when they're not the same players. You probably meant the team as a whole.

I’ve been listening to the Connor Carrick podcast for Leafs content during the pandemic. He’s a real health and fitness and lifestyle oriented athlete and will often interview ex Marlies and Leafs teammates as well as other high performance athletes and sports science people. One of the subjects he talks about constantly is sleep science and managing energy levels from game day to game day, getting enough rest and recovery. And I often wonder if these things are related to how a young team might not be fully mature from an off ice regimen POV and this has a negative impact on energy and preparation levels game to game.

The leafs spend boatloads on that kind of stuff.

It's hard to give a crap when you know you've already received the biggest monetary prize of your life, undeserved, guaranteed no matter what you do.

Much easier to take most nights off, leave the rink unscathed and play some Playstation with the boys.

Of course, anyone who watches the games consistently will come to that conclusion. This is for the people who don't watch the Leafs often and think its just the fans blowing smoke.

I would like to inform stat mongers of another fun fact:

The very best teams in the NHL only win around 59% of their Regular Season games.

If people think that analytics/advanced statistics are going to tell you the outcome of a game then think again.

Sportsnet has recently been showing the possession time of each team as though it's as important as the score on your screen. It's really funny. A team could control the puck all night and still lose.

IMHO
FWIW
FYI
ASAP

Just saying

I don't spend much time checking advanced analytics etc because this is not what I enjoy talking about, but I just avoid the threads that don't interest me. In the case of this specific graph, people know the Leafs are inconsistent, but maybe don't knowthem to be such outliers. The comparison to the rest of the league is interesting, IMO.

Thanks for sharing. This is some great content. Man, there are a lot of people responding on this thread that I'd like to never hear from again.

This thread just killed zeke..

Honestly , I don't see why this really would be in conflict with what zeke preaches. It doesn't say we aren't good, it says that we are far too often inconsistent or wildly bad. At least that's what I took from the article, I will admit it lost me a few times.

It's like in production - it is important not only to build the proper quantity in a given year, but also to consistently build the proper quantity during periods.

Anyways, my dumb $$$ should stop talking now.

It's great to see charts and data that paint a picture visually of where Toronto lies compared to other teams league-wide regarding consistency.

No doubt this is something fans have seen for years, it's nice to see the numbers back it up.

On the flipside, it's very interesting to see how often they also dominate teams with >1 xG.

Thanks to Chace McCallum for making these charts and analyzing data. Very helpful. Not surprised to see the boomers who don't understand something claim it as useless.
