He is one of those players that is more worth to keep than to trade. Habs should try to re sign him to an extension.

He kills penalties, hustles, pretty good at face offs, plays physical. You need to keep those fourth line centers on any hockey team. They are very difficult to replace.

Keep in mind that his max value would be a 2nd from a playoff team. That puts the pick in the #45-64 range. If someone told you that you would draft a player who will play 400+ career games (he is at 280 now), kill penalties, good at face offs and pace for 30 points a season I’m sure everyone would take that.
God this is such an awful way to value assets.

MTL has control of Evans for 1 season, which they have virtually 0 chance of making the playoffs in.

Beyond that, he is a UFA. MTL can bring him back at around UFA market value if they want. But that costs cap space. And they could also use that money on any other UFA at market value, or to do anything else with.

If MTL trades Evans, they can then, in the offseason, sign any number of UFAs including other 4Cs like Sturm, Dowd, Eller, Acciari, Faksa, or even Evans himself.

There is also nothing stopping Evans from leaving after this year if he so desires.

Draft picks cost 950k a year for 3 years, and then you get RFA rights for another 4.

If he is retained I think his value is easily a 2nd. Remember all the talk about Dowd a last year's deadline? Centers who can win draws, PK and give you good, honest minutes tend to be in demand.

Dowd is a different level of 4C. They put that man through literal hell and he cooks. nobody else is particularly close to him in terms how he's used, and he still somehow plays his minutes even. Also dowd had 2 years instead of just a deadline rental

He'd certainly fetch a late 2nd as he's the textbook 4th line center aspiring teams are gonna go after at the TD.

But Habs gonna keep him.

They need good veteran to show the way

I'd keep Jake as a 4th line centre on a 4 year deal.

Dvorak needs to go
Anderson can gtfo
I'd trade Armia as well
Matheson can be had for the right price

Keep Savard and Gally for the right price.

Best I can do is the Rangers 2nd this year and french prodigy Jean-Luc Foudy.
That's like 60th overall pick. Not much there. Call me closer to deadline.

We might be able to throw in a 4th for you to move it up to a first? If nobody offers a late first or early second.

Like others have said, Evans is a guy the Habs would probably like to keep around as you know what you're getting with him and he probably won't cost a lot. That said if someone is offering a 2nd at the TDL (probably no because ideally he's a 4C on a contender) then sure adieux.
