Trade: Evan Longoria to the Giants

Nothing wrong with what the Giants are doing. The team was in shambles because of MadBum injury and a few others, but still a lot of talent. If they also land Bruce somehow then this team is loaded again, granted they are loaded with old AF veterans....but they still loaded.

Looking forward to next season and this is looking like the best division in baseball.

Also can't believe they managed to get some cash from a team like Tampa lol.

Seems as though the Giants are being a bit underrated in this thread, a lot of things went wrong for them last season, they are still contenders.

but theres still 3 playoff teams in that division from last year that arent the giants

I don't think the Giants are approaching this the right way at all. They are 4th best in their division even with this move.

4th? yea, good one. They are better than the Rockies... we just got screwed with MadBum's injury which derailed everything. But if the Twins and D-Backs can go from the bottom of the standings in one year, I don't see how we can't.

Giants will be in the 70s in win total. A lot will depend on Cueto if they are better. They are not a contender.

There's a lot more than just Cueto involved with that. Bumgarner not missing three months would have helped. Smith not missing the entire season would have helped too. They're not as bad as people think but I agree they aren't a contender yet. They need a good leadoff hitter to even have that tag be entertained. They also have to figure out the back end of their rotation and get a lefty in the bullpen. But they're talking about signing Bruce to go with this and while it certainly helps in a way, it's not where they need the help unless they're going to put Belt and Panik at the top of the lineup.

I see a team that probably needs 2 starting pitchers (Stratton is 4th right now it seems and really you need 6 guys at a bare minimum) and basically a brand new OF (or 2 spots if you want to trust Pence). And they have already have a massive payroll with limited resources to trade from. I am dubious they can fill the holes.

Yeah they totally need a leadoff man who can steal bases. For whatever reason Nunez was fairly trash as a Giant. I think i might prefer going after Lorenzo Cain over Bruce, would fit better into a small ball style they should be playing
1. Cain*
2. Belt
3. Posey
4. Longoria
5. Crawford
6. Pence
7. Panik
8. Parker

Right now, they have Stratton and Blach as their 4 and 5. They probably will give Beede as much of a shot at a spot in the rotation as they can because they may need to put Blach in the bullpen because Osich and Okert suck so much as lefty relievers and Smith is not going to be healthy to start the season. I am skeptical of their ability to fill the holes as well but I don't think they'll be as bad as they were last year and better than most expect them to be this year...it's still not going to be a playoff team or a contender unless they get a monumental pitching performance from their rotation and plug the holes in their bullpen.

Nah, they really aren't

Until proven otherwise at this point the Rockies are still better. The Giants aren't a near 100 loss team in terms of talent but I don't know if they're an 87 win team yet. They got lineup issues especially at the top and some of that is coaching and they have glaring question marks in the back end of their rotation and in the bullpen. They're maybe a .500 team right now with what they have.

The Giants got him for pretty much nothing (don't @ me about how Arroyo is something) but they get even older so the decline for the team is going to be quick and brutal and may have already started last year.

How exactly is getting younger getting older all of a sudden?

The Giants traded a 22 year old for a 32 year old. I'll stand by my statement that they did in fact get older.

You said that 22 year old was not even a something, so go ahead and change things around but in reality they traded a guy who will be 34 on opening day for one who is 32, but hey! older!

Span is nothing too. They traded their 22 year old 3rd baseman for a 32 year old 3rd baseman. I don't know why this is so hard to understand. And yes Arroyo sucks, that has nothing to do with the Giants continuing to get older.

joe sheehan crushed it writing about this today. if you don't subscribe to his newsletter you're missing out.

"I do think it’s interesting to consider the counterfactual here, where Evan Longoria plays out a shorter contract extension and, at 31, elects to sign a free-agent contract somewhere else. Would we have heard about 'loyalty' and 'the fans' and 'hometown discounts' in that case? It seems to me that we only bemoan the separation of a player and his longtime employer -- a player and the fan base that loves him -- when the separation is at the choice of the player. What is the Rays’ responsibility to the 12-year-olds who got #3 jerseys for Christmas two years ago?
"Remember this trade the next time a star leaves a team he never chose and is castigated for it. Remember this trade the next time you want to cite 'loyalty' as a reason for a young man to make a career decision. There is no loyalty in sports."

Ok, so you are saying trading a prospect for an mlb player is getting older. Brilliant analysis, TBS will be calling soon
