Player Discussion Evan Bouchard

For a defenceman he sucks at defence. No way do I give him a nickel over 7M, but hey, that’s just me. I’m sure he’ll get 10+ and just cripple the cap even further.

He is elite in the playoffs, although he sank when it mattered most. That's a couple of bad games though

He is a core member of the team that will get 8 years. Probably 11 or 12 million aav. Hopefully less.

Amazing how barely 5 minutes after the playoffs ended, piles of Oiler fans gloss over a dominant playoff run to suddenly get back on the "Bouchard sucks" bandwagon. I sometimes wonder if people were so traumatized by the Nurse contract circumstances and subsequent albatross deal that they automatically think any other defenseman the Oilers develop will turn into a pumpkin the second he gets paid too

3rd best player on the team and well deserving of his incoming payday.

Team canada is always known for taking the best available players.

You think every D that makes team canada is a top 10 D man?

I think we all understand that you dont really understand what's going on, on the ice.

You prove it time and time again, waiting for Bouchard to make 1 mistake, and racing here to tell everyone how smart you are.

Yet, we just sit back point and laugh.
Dude I complimented Bouchard this playoffs and said he was playing great. You wait until I make a negative post and come after me.

Bouchard is all over the place. Great, good, bad and ugly. It just is what it is.

And the few people that think Bouchard is a top 3/5 defensemen just roam around this thread with no negative backlash.

Bouchard had a bad regular season. A really good playoffs and then cratered in the finals.

^Is this take really that bad
Lol. Cratered.

I'd say McDavid and Drai cratered more.

The plays you think were mostly on Bouchard...weren't.

The Ekholm pass. The Walman giveaway in game 5. The Walman back up last game

You also don't realize Bouchard almost dragged us back into game 5. He had 2 goals negated by Corey Perry.

But sure....let's say he "cratered"

For someone who claims they get paid to watch hockey....you sure don't seem to see alot

Ah the Irony.... I have been the vocal one that started the discussion on Mcdavid cratering. So don't act like I am not in that discussion.

Evan and Davo have nothing to do with each other. Bouchard played bad in the most important game of the year. I said it and it triggered you.

You just target my posts and have fun with it. Get over yourself and have a hockey discussion.

I like the idea of a Bouch bridge. We are really, REALLY, up against the cap in the next 2 years. If a bridge gets him down to the $8 M range, I think its something we have to look into. Yes, it really screws us in 3 years from now, but lets be honest, in 3 years from now the McDrai window is closed for good so who really cares? Its likely closed already truthfully, but having Bouchard at $2 M less the next 2 years would help keep it open. The real win is the potential of McDavid taking a discount on his next deal, although I don't expect that to happen in reality.

Give him 2 years 8 million then give him an 8 year deal with an extra 1.5 million AAV attached for taking the bridge

Next year is the only year that the Oilers don't have much Cap flexibility. If I was the Oilers i would suggest locking him up for 9 years structured with a cap hit of $5M next season, then $10.25M over the next 8 years.

This gives him $87M over the next 9 years as opposed to the $80M over 8 years he is asking for. It gives the team a better chance to be competitive next season and then once the cap situation loosens up it gives him the money he is asking for.

I like this line of thinking but it is an extremely risky bet on his side. If he has a career altering or ending injury he will have missed out on the better part of $100 million. McDavid has already gotten his bag, if anyone should consider taking a discount to win it's the captain.

How is he missing out? He gets more money this way.

I'd be walking on eggshells until that 2nd contract was signed. That's an awful lot to ask of a guy that hasn't gotten his big payday yet.
Yeah, we'd be seeing a very skittish Bouchard until he signs halfway through the season. He'd be doing everything to avoid contact. I imagine his critics would pounce on the increase in turnovers as a reason to not sign him longer term.

As Frank says he can't sign until later. Say he gets a massive injury and suddenly can only skate at an AHL level or he can't play at all? Then he's out $82 million in career earnings.

Interesting, I never knew there were restrictions on extending 1 year contracts. Where does the CBA address this?

Not necessarily lol but luckily the oilers dont have that guy. Imagine bouchard going "nah this is all a deal, i will play the year and show i am worth 8*13" lmfao
