Player Discussion Evan Bouchard

Stauffer finally got Knoblauch pinned down on Bouchard’s defense and he refused to answer.

I’m sure he doesn’t want to publicly throw a player under the bus, but this speaks volumes about how defense is an afterthought with this staff and this group.

That's bit of a leap. A coach not wanting to throw a player under the bus publicly doesn't mean he didn't tear a strip off him in behind closed doors.

I think from a personnel perspective they definitely value offensive skill ("unteachable") over defensive awareness ("it can be taught"). And from a coaching perspective, at least listening to Coffey, he wants his guys to make plays... and be situationally aware.

Bouchard may just be a guy who hears the words and doesn't actually know what they mean.

I would maybe agree that a little tough love early in the season could have helped. They should have taken him off PP1 in favor of Nurse when Bouch let up like three breakaways against in the first 5 games. Make him earn his way back by making better decisions at the blue line.

I think Bouchard is gone. He has bled goals and we offered Rantanen 11 million.

Last night Bouchard's lack of urgency was responsible for two goals against, then he was a big part of the comeback. Swings like that are killing this team mentally and he's going to cost 10+

Would be a lot easier to take if we'd kept Broberg. Akey is still a couple years away at best. We'd need an RD in return for Bouchard, which complicates any trade... there are a few nice RFA's out there, but tough to see another team agreeing to an RFA for RFA trade involving Bouchard (I mean it's nice to imagine Samberg++ for Bouchard, but it's probably way beyond the realm of reality). We'd likely have to go UFA route and options are limited.

Not the end of the world. Can sign Ekblad and trade for Karlsson at 50%. Both players together would probably cost 13M. That leaves a couple of $$ for a top 6 player and Gibson by trading Stuart++

Ekholm-Karlsson
Nurse-Ekblad
Kulak-Walman
Emberson/Stecher

Bouchard is a perfect example of stats telling a very different story from what the player has truly been because the mistakes he does make are ill timed horrendous mistakes that you rarely see from true top pairing Dmen.

You see the numbers - 14 goals, 67 points in 81 games and a +14 and 3 assists and +1 in the playoff game and think he's having a great year just by the numbers but anybody who has watched him play can see how brutal defensively he's been this season and terrible with puck management. I'd love to do a deep dive into the numbers but there has to be a reason why the numbers and eye test paint a completely different story. McDrai inflation is the best answer I can come up with.

Conversely, you see Nurse's and metrics which are weaker in comparison to Bouchard and I think he's had a far better year than Bouchard. He's the anti-McDrai inflation guy.

Long story short, I don't think they can afford to give Bouchard the franchise contract he's seeking and expect to be Cup competitive for long. I have no idea what to do with him. I think trading him would be a mistake but also think signing him long term would be a mistake. Even a bridge deal will be pricey for what he is. This guy was a borderline top 10 Dman last year and now I'm not sure what he is, product of Ekholm perhaps?

To me it's a classic...

He's a possession guy until he's F'n oh-my-gawd-why-did-you-do-that NOT. He makes pro-offense plays with the puck on the first 4 touches every shift, high risk plays often, that nobody else can make (or would try) and then he coughs up a pizza or an braindead pinch and it's a breakaway against.

I've been saying this all year... this is part of the reason our goalies' stats are putrid. You don't bank a good SPCT when your team has the puck 80% of the night except when they give up a breakaway. The other reason of course, is that our goalies are not good... but I'm telling you that's only half of the problem.

Sadly I don't know where I can find stats to back up my claim... HDSC doesn't really do it, we all know that we are reasonably good at boxing out once in our zone (which is where such numbers accumulate)... but it's the much rarer, but far more lethal, odd man, river hockey, rushes against that kill us.

Also of interest: according to Moneypuck we are 5th worst in rebound goals against, 6th worst in own-zone giveaways and 2nd worst in blocked shots. Which begs the question... are we truly good defensively, or we just have the puck a lot more than the other team?

To me, those stats above are symptoms of Bouchard's double edged sword type of play. He's butter soft defensively, but he usually has the puck moving productively in the right direction because he sees the ice really well... what he doesn't do is have any sense of moderation or self-control in threading a Hail Mary stretch pass.

That's not bad, I did see Ekblad on the UFA list and still intrigued by him. Not sure Karlsson would be my choice though. You swap him with (gasp) barrie and you save $6M/year that you can spend on a true goalie or shutdown/all situations #3C.

Ekholm Walman
Nurse Ekblad
Kulak Barrie
Emberson/Stecher

Heck you could even run 7 D on nights you are up against a tight checking team... Barrie plays PP and O-zone draws and Emberson plays a regular shift.

Could you imagine Karlsson,Barrie and Bouchard on one blueline! We’d need to score 10 times a game and Skinner’s GAA would be double digit cuz we’d give up 20+ HDSC per game We need a RHD but more like a Oleksiak or Byfuglien

That's great. Your setup would allow us to sign Bennett. We still have a ton of assets left from trading Bouchard. Go big fish signing for a top pairing D when the cap goes to 110M+

Nurse is worse. Without Nurse we have the cap to pay Bouchard and Ryan Reeves or some type of guy with the strength and brains of Nurse without the insane ego cap hit that he "would have gotten anywhere else" we should have Klingberged Nurse and kept Barrie to help Bouch grow a bit but nahhh cant have that we have the worst management team in professional sports at this point. Yakupov over Rielly and etc.

The Oilers defence is better with Ekblad, no question. Is it me though, or does he always seem to be injured though?

Exactly...I have been saying this for years now. Bouchard is worse than useless on D because he CAUSES a lot of the 10 bell defensive issues on this team.

Elite offence or not...Bouchard can GTFO IMO.

You dont win with players like this making $10+ million.

To think that there were posters on here arguing that Bouchard made Ekholm better....f**king ridiculous.

Even this is a stretch these days... He's killing our PP and right now is playing like a mid offensive guy
