Imagine if he didnt get lucky with 6 seconds left and Marner walks down and wins it at the buzzer. What an terrible period of hockey.

Exactly. He wants 11. He isn’t even getting half of that with his play
Unfortunately for Edmonton, players and teams have basically negotiated that NHL defensemen get paid mostly on points and minutes played per game. (Which is why guys like Nurse and Jones got paid so much, despite it being almost universally agreed that they weren't top tier defensemen at the time)

And as long as Bouchard is running Edmonton's power play, he's going to play a lot, and put up a ton of points. He'll have them by the balls in negotiations and there's not a lot they can do about it, if they want to keep him.

I'll preface this by saying that we always see this. The bigger number comes out and then when the player and team negotiate something different, the player looks like a great guy for compromising. He'll sign for higher than Nurse, but lower than 11M.

It doesn't matter if he is only 11M as a product of McDavid/Draisaitl because they intend to re-sign McDavid and they have already signed Draisaitl. If they could easily replace him with someone else who could also be a product of them at a lower cap, they would have done so. Don't mess with what's working.

The cap is going to be 100M-110M very soon.

Another factor is that if Draisaitl, Bouchard, and McDavid take up all the cap space it will help the team because they usually use cap space to their detriment. It will stop them from signing Matt Rempe to a 5M offer sheet or something.

So who would have more value to the Oilers, Bouchard @ $11 X 8 years or McAvoy @ $9.5 Million for four more years?

Seems to me McAvoy is the better player and paid less.

Would Boston make that deal? I certainly wouldn’t. Bouchard is terrible defensively.
