Vlady was never really a prospect . He is a local legend though :). As is his pops.

A lot of these could be polish as well, the languages are so similar. Konopka's father is from Poland. Zajac is also means rabbit. Dubnyk is very Polish sounding.

Zajac is of Ukrainian descent. No one could mistake that nose for anything but Ukrainian

As we all know, pretty much all (at least white) americans and canadians have european roots, whether its 1 generation back or 15 generations.

Im pretty interested in history so when games get boring I tend to speculate about where players origin from.

Thus far I've come to the conclussion that Ryan O'Reilly has irish heritage.

Giroux has obviously got french roots, as alot of Canadian players. Cammalleri, Italian? Stamkos is of Ukrainian or Belarusian heritage if im not mistaken. Milan Lucic sounds Albanian or Bosnian to me.

Feel free to contribute!

(By the way, do you north american ever pay attention to your european roots? My impression is that italian americans seem to identify themselves a bit more with their european roots then north americans hailing from other european countries. Perhaps the french canadians should be mentioned as well?)

Lucic is Serbian. I'm good friends with his cousin in Vancouver.

Are you sure about this? Sounds Eastern European to me, either Polish or Ukrainian.

I think the Staal brothers are of danish heritage, its not an uncommon surname, the danish equivalent would be Stål (Steel). That, and they look so damn danish.

:amazed::shakehead.........no way man.......Danes are a lot more handsome then those goofy looking brothers !

Vlasic is Croatian. So is Sarich, and Sakic was another player of Croatian descent. Stamkos and Jovanovski are both Macedonian (in Stamkos' case he's half), Stajan is of Slovenian background.

I was going to post that I'd assume Jovanvski was at least part Polish but then I remembered that I had a friend in college that was I think Macedonian and his last name ended in "ski".

BTW, not hockey but another famous Croatian, or at least half Croatian is Bill Belichick.

Im pretty sure Stamkos is Greek.

Anyway the Italian-Americans and Italian-Canadians are pretty obvious:

Del Zotto
Girardi
Cammalleri
Palmieri
Bonino
Cogliano
Coliacovo
Gionta(x2)
Pietrangelo

etc

Nice to see Croatians being represented in North American sports. Part of the reason why I like Sakic so much.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Luongo. Carcillo as well (good friends with his brother and its pretty obvious lol)

Shanahan is a giveaway (Irish).

Damon Severson: Swedish

Nope, more likely British.

I have always assumed that everyone in NA with a surname that ends with sson, son, sen have Scandinavian heritage.

Most people in N.A. with names ending in son are probably of British extraction.

It all depends on the first name in the sson/son surname.

If it's a name like Johnson, Clarkson, etc... (or Severson as above) it's most likely of British origin. But if it's Anderson. Ericson, Johanson, and similar, it's most likely of Scandinavian origin instead.
John is the equal to Johan in Scandinavia, and for instance Scarlett Johansson is of Swedish origin as an example.
