ESPN player name graphics during PPs

I’m surprised at the responses in this thread. I find the name bars completely distracting (especially when the puck is passed back and forth quickly so the names are on the screen for half a second). The name bars do also block the actual play, including when a player is in front of the net. I really dislike the name bars and am glad that SN doesn’t use them.

Well I didn’t see this thread so I’m sorry, but I think it’s too bad the creator of this thread is hating on this. The name bars have a lot of utility and are not very distracting. I think you are just hating on it because it’s new and different

Do you feel the same way about the time and score being displayed during games? That is a relatively new practice as well.

I know most players in the league and can follow the game extremely well. I watched a game with my friend and his gf tonight and they don't watch hockey at all and that type of stuff helped immensely for them. They could see where Patrick Kane was and that was basically the only player they knew.

it's the play by play guy's job to describe the play. I could do without the graphics and also without the chronic scores of the other games so i can go watch them from the beginning on DVR

While we're at it why in the HELL was I watching Cory Perry's kid whIle the GD overtime was under way

bally's pulling fox tracks(and black.. kind of looked like sticks all over the ice) on reviews and pp's this season was significantly worse than the name over the head IMHO

...buuuut i feel you.

Not only names, they even added clock on the ice showing what’s left from the penalty. As if that same information being in the left corner wasn’t enough and as if the ice wasn’t already full of ads.

I'm more annoyed by the constant switching to the corner camera where you can't see anything developing and then they're always late switching back to the main camera. Also there's too many times where some random bench scene is shown while there's a PP happening.

I much prefer what TBS does during PP’s. They have a ticker which displays the numbers of all the offensive players on the ice. This way new fans can better identify players but there isn’t a computer graphic obstructing play and constantly changing every time a new player touches the puck.

I think it is good to experiment with different concepts for this.
Some ideas survive and get improved upon.

I wouldn't mind having some options to either have a "clean" screen or turn on some additional visual assistance. Technology is improving so I'm quite optimistic.

If you have ADD/ADHD you don't like it
If you don't have, then its fine, you can even learn to like it if given enough time to adjust

For me its not a distraction, its kinda cool, fresh, i miss those cool and funny animation graphics during broadcasts..
anyone know what i'm talking about? :)

Like, two logos come to alive and start fighting each other for no particular reason, or other animated graphics running bottom
or top of your screen.

also, off topic

EA games were funny and enjoyable once, full of awesome music and lots of thought were put to them, new experiences in every game,
now...each game is copy of its previous version, pretty much. - no heart, no soul, just grabbing your money

ESPN is displaying the player's name with the puck in the style of EA hockey video games during powerplays.

Absolute bush league and distracting.

You think a bush league would have the technology to put up player name graphics during play!? No chance.

Next time, learn what an insult means before you use it.

Haha, I thought the same thing. It looks like someone broke their stick and dropped it. What a terrible idea

I don’t think I’ve seen that before. Looks like a much better idea

Hockey fans: More people should watch this sport

NHL broadcasts: Hey here's some little UI things we can do to make it easier to see who the players are and what they're doing

Hockey fans: NOOO, NOT LIKE THAT!!!
Do hockey fans really want more people to watch the sport? How does that benefit any of us?

All these digital features are making the NHL tough to watch on TV. Aesthetically, it’s obviously so bad but the NHL is a complete prostitute unlike other sports leagues so the ice will be covered by more and more digital ads and since nobody is watching they try really hard to do new things like player name graphics but it’s just an another stupid idea that will not last. The NHL is in a constant identity crisis because they don’t succeed at growing the league in the US.

They need to shit can it - and experiment in pre-season.

When players are on far side of ice (from camera) it's annoying, it's irritating but not brutal I guess. The little name tags float along the boards or maybe even the crowd depending on how close to boards the player with the puck is.

However, for players on the near side of ice to the camera the name tags float in the middle of the rink and over other players, the puck, everything. As they approach the net -- often with several other players -- you have the usual congestion fighting for the puck with John f***ing Tavares' (or whoever) name clogging up and covering the play.

ESPN should give a choice -- no play by play and name tag option, or play by play and no name tag options.

I don't mind seeing other announcers call games and was toying with the idea of watching the last FLA/BOS game on ESPN rather than NESN. But because of those stupid power play name tags I didn't think long. Won't watch ESPN for that reason alone if there is any other choice.

I don't mind it too much, for two reasons. First, in the playoffs I watch a lot of teams I'm not familiar with, so seeing the player names helps a bit. Secondly, I often watch hockey without audio, because my family is sleeping, so it also helps there with unfamiliar teams. I can see it may also help watching hockey in bars, restaurants, etc for the same reason.
