ESPN creating a 'NFL RedZone' program called Frozen Frenzy for the NHL, will debut October 24th

I can't imagine life without NFL RedZone so I love this idea for the NHL.
They sort of do this already with the NHL network and their live look-ins but commercial free without all the panel commentary could be so much better.

I feel this make sense for how the NFL schedule work and importance of the few regular season games and how the sport work of short 5-20s play/long pause predictable constant rythme, the giant betting-fantasy side.

NHL ? Significantly less obvious (more than 3 game being played at the same time seem both a lot to follow and rare to care about for most of the regular season, how often will it occur ?), still nice to have for some I am sure.

Idk if anyone suggested this yet, but NHL RedLight is a lot cooler of a name and makes it immediately identifiable as to what it is.

The force alliteration makes it sound stupid, IMO.

Buccigross is a great.

So passionate about hockey, and college hockey
He knows the american system pretty well for american prospects
Yawn, he’s ESPNs company man that just keeps hanging around.

The TNT thing is working in part because they’ve invested in and brought in a strong crew.

Also a thing with the nfl is you can go in live when a team is threatening to score. In the nhl other than a Power play and pulled goalies it's such a fluid game it's not obvious which game to focus on sometimes

So what’s the over/under from first puck drop before someone logs in to announce this is ‘trash’ and they’re done forever because Bucci used a phrase they didn’t like or some other reason? 90 seconds or so?

For those worried about Bucci or anything else announcer related:

We OD on Red Zone every week. We had the DIRECTV version with Andrew and loved listening to him all day. He made us laugh while showing us everything that happened on the field.

We had to switch to the other guy this year and it took about five minutes to get used to the new guy. Whatever his name is lol.

It’s about the game. Not practice. Not practice. Not the announcer. The game.

Give it a chance, you may be surprised. I doubt either Red Zone channel was perfect the first day.

Blackhawks games are also blacked out, I just didn't mention that considering STL makes zero sense as a blacked out market.

It's 5 hours to drive from here to STL. I don't know a single Blues fan in this area and seeing any Blues apparel is no more common than any other team in the league. It's mostly Chicago and some Detroit fans here.
Kraken games are blacked out in the Portland, OR area. It's a 3-1/2 drive from my house to Climate Pledge in ideal traffic. Trust me on this, Gary, nobody is making that drive because they can't catch the Kraken home game on TV.

The ghost of Bill Wirtz must work at NHL headquarters.

Frozen Frenzy or no FF an ancillary benefit is the stagger. So weird how many nights we’re going back and forth between different games and boom, six games go to break close to the same time and you have 10+ minutes of no hockey.

Just one game starting 15 minutes later solves that.

Football works a little better than hockey will, in my opinion. Football has a natural progression down the field towards an endzone. Redzone will switch to certain games when they know the possibility of a score is high. Hockey is a little different, goals are often random and unpredictable, unless they are going to switch between games with powerplays.

Hmm some nights there are only a handful of games or fewer and the start times can be staggered by 3+ Hours…unlike NFL Sundays where there are at least 8-10 games going on at 1:00 PM EST.

And as someone else mentioned hockey is much faster, goals can happen in an instant. Scores in football develop more gradually.

Interesting to see it’s implementation
They'll show the replays. A lot of stuff on RZ that looks live, isn't.

So nothing is live, aren't redzone fanatics basically gambling / fantasy sports fanatics? Doesn't that affect the level of interest?
I have no interest in gambling, fantasy sports, or the NFL (huge football fan but not NFL) but NFL RedZone is amazing. When I have access to it I'll watch the shit out of it.

Names like pang and botterill

Nah I’m good

I don't mind Pang. I get he's high pitched and a bit nerdy but the guy loves the sport, knows what he's talking about, and seems like a genuinely nice guy. That beats Pierre, who was very knowledgeable, but downright creepy rather than nerdy, and from what I understand could be a bit of a dick.

Botterill is also very shrill and it bugs the piss out of me when she feels the need to contribute but doesn't have anything to say, so she just giggles at what the other commentator said and goes "Ohhhhh".

...... All that said, I'll gladly take both over the abomination that is Leah Hextall. It's an insult to even compare the two to Leah, but it's also an insult that Leah still has a job.

RedZone has Scott Hanson.
Frozen Frenzy can have Chris Hansen, but you better get used to watching a lot of Nashville highlights.

They’ll just have Cabbie and Gretzky cutting in for bumper gambling ads at the bottom corners.
I think this style of program is probably designed with gamblers in mind to begin with.

I bet it’s so successful for the NFL content because of all the sports gambling going on in the US.

I bet this is being put together to try to encourage NHL gamblers and foster new ones

How would that even work for hockey? It doesn't make sense

You just have to think ‘what do sports gamblers need to know during the games and give them that”

Ugh. I really don't like the NFL version. I can see why some would as it's essentially an ongoing/live highlight reel. I'd rather watch how a game develops and what happens during the 'boring' plays as they often set up the more exciting ones.

With hockey, things can go periods at a time without 'highlight reel' things happening. And a turnover can happen quickly and a goal scored before the TV producer could put down his coffee cup and punch the 'watch this' button...

Then too there's the football is pretty much only played on Sunday so bouncing between games makes sense. The NHL plays every day, generally with only 3-5 games total during weeknights. There's going to be lots of time in between interesting things to watch .

Not that it really matters, the NHL will figure out the shortest path to screwing it up and gleefully head down that one ...
