This is probably more of an off-season move after the Penguins pay Karlsson's $5 million signing bonus and the cap rise gets finalized.
I think they could likely get a 2026 1st for him, probably with taking another contract back. The 2025 draft kinda sucks so I'd be trying to get a 2026 1st personally.

If I am correct, the Penguins only have 1 retention spot left for now but after this season we get Petry and Smith off the books.
I think retaining on Rakell for now is the better option, and then dealing Karlsson in the offseason with retention.
Rakell @ 50% is very attractive. I would aim for Tampa and Isaac Howard. Maybe Howard, 25’ 2nd, and Sheary. Rumor has it Tampa is after a forward.

HFBoards is under the (bizzarely incorrect) impression that Karlsson has negative value right now. I wouldn't expect much actual discussion from this.
No reason to retain on Rakell in my opinion. His contract is already very attractive and only gets better over the next 3 seasons that he is signed for as the cap goes up.
But we can so why not maximize return? A team is probably more likely to part with a better prospect if there is retention in the deal

It depends on how much better the prospect is. The retention slot for the next three years has an opportunity cost that needs to be taken into account.

EK even at six mil x 2 will still be an older guy who can’t play defensively. IMO he could have some value at the 2026 TDL with double retention.
Please explain why EK would have positive trade value? Use draft pick value. With his contract what draft pick would EK return? No retention and no cap coming back. Just straight EK for picks.

No retention or cap coming back at all? Columbus gives a 2nd + 3rd, easily. I don't know if Karlsson would waive his NMC to go there, which would be the issue with a lot of potential suitors without retention. But that would be a starting point in a vacuum.

Imo there is no club that would pay to acquire EK, and take on his whole cap and not send back salary. Imo EK has negative value. He should have some value in a year, when he’s a coming ufa, providing Pittsburgh pays for double retention.
The title says the Penguins are retaining (double retention). Not sure what you are arguing.

A Karlsson trade in practice would likely have the Penguins both retaining salary and taking some salary back, simply because a team that Karlsson would waive for would be more cap-strapped than Columbus is. However, in that case, Karlsson would be returning a 1st+.
(Karlsson is already being retained on; the Penguins would be the 2nd and final retainer for Karlsson's salary.)
I'd take EK65 back on the Sharks at 6.5 mil (the lowest the Sharks can get his cap down to through Pittsburgh) but I have no idea what the asking price would be.

No way he waives to go back there and waste his last few years, it can't be forgotten that he has a full NMC
What would Dubas be looking for from Ottawa, excluding a 1st or Yak, which would both be part of the initial ask from Kyle no doubt
It's definitely going to start with a 1st, but I do not think it has to be a 2025 first.

Consensus seems to be Ottawa will be giving that one up for the whole Vegas debacle anyway, though I'm still hopeful Gary reduces the punishment for misleading Andlauer in the sale process. How's about a slightly used Norris? lol
