Minnesota Wild C Erik Haula suffered a fractured jaw (nondisplaced) playing for Finland in the gold medal game at the World Championship on May 25. He will not require surgery and is expected to be fully recovered in 3-4 weeks.

Wanted to post this since there was many that believed that the crosscheck didn't hit Haula in the head, and that Haula embellished.. Also, most of the people i've seen talked about it on the net has said that it was a minor at worst, when in fact Malkin should've recieved a major.

You're always responsible for youur stick, always.

I definitely think it should've been a penalty, maybe even major penalty. Well....what else is new.

It's not a major or a suspension. He's not trying to hit Haula in the face, he's just reacting to protect himself. 4 minute high sticking would the retrospective appropriate call. As for embellishing calls from the keyboard warriors, much of HFboards haven't even played hockey.

He's doing the messier. You can hit me all you want, if you're willing to eat my stick to do it. This kind of play has been around forever. He is protecting himself, but he's doing it dirty. It's intentional. He saw a guy coming and he kept both hands on his stick and held it high in front of him. It's intentional and it's dirty. No accident here.

In the NHL that would be a suspension

Reaction to protecting himself is actually right but doesn't mitigate that move at all, its dangerous play when player is coming high speed and you "take it" with a crosscheck. Malkin as experienced player should know better and I don't believe a second that he couldn't have avoid it, it can't be automatic for him as such experienced player.

2+2+10 for crosscheck (personal 10 for head shot) at least, 5min major at worst.

Malkin definitely had passion to win that consolidation prize after Sochi humiliation. No doubt in a game with good refs that would be penalty, maybe even major.

My thoughts exactly. Dirty play by a good player.

the offical IIHF rule book says:

b) A player who carries or holds his stick or any part of it above the height of the shoulders that makes contact with an opponent and causes an injury with his stick or any part of it to an opponent shall be assessed at the discretion of the Referee a

- Major penalty + Automatic Game Misconduct penalty (5’+GM)

or

- Match penalty (MP)

The refs obviously didn't see it because that's a major and a game every time in the IIHF.

To be fair it also says under case C that if it is judged to be accidental, a double minor should be given instead. Such a clause doesn't exist for cross-checking though, which is also an automatic ejection if it results in injury. However all penalties have that "at the discretion of the referee" bit there, meaning they can basically call the game any way they want to.
