Erie Otters 2024 25 Season Thread Part I

This was a side of Spence I had never seen the entire time he has been in Erie. Originally I thought it was to just show how phsycial he could be and maybe help his draft stock in the process.

After watching the game play out it was clear they got in the head of Parekh and they out-muscled Saginaw from the start. He was relentless and as a result the team followed his lead. IMO, this was one of his greatest displays of leadership to date. Minus fights, this was reminiscent of old school playoff hockey.

Well the task is pretty straight forward tonight. Close it out. As Sam Alfano said in his postgame interview, business trip just like games 1 and 2. I heard Schaefer and Terrance again made the trip with the boys, but still no idea on if they’ll play. I wouldn’t be surprised if they just take morning skate and that’s it.
Schaefer definitely won't play. He's not on the Otters playoff roster.

Spence was really physical when he was really young, but that side of his game hadn’t been there as much in the OHL until recently. But that’s just not as much of the game these days, and I think he’s been a presence in other ways (forechecking, forcing turnovers with his stick and not by laying guys out, etc.)

But Parekh has a way of getting guys to take runs at him, and Spence been dealing with him since Peewee or so, so there’s plenty of history there. I’ve loved watching it.

Good series Erie! You were able to slow down the top line that had been a juggernaut for the last two months and we didn't have the depth to keep up... Great goaltending and finished shots when it counted... You've got your work cut out for you in the next round but I'll be pulling for you.
lol pulling for them? Interesting

It is crazy it only took all regular season for the team on the ice to play like the team on paper.

Curious to see if Terrance and/or Schaefer will be back for thr London series. It will definitely be a physical, fast, and grueling one. We can't have any mental mistakes.

Great series, definitely better than I had predicted. I figured 6 or 7 games. Onward now to probably the most complete team this season.

Good series win for Erie. Nice to see their offense come alive even if it was against a not so great back up goalie. Considering what they had coming into the year, I expected more firepower and at least they gave us fans a first round show

I dont expect much in round 2 but man, I really would love to see Schaefer / Terrance return… Even though they might be a bit rusty, it would be great to see Erie be a bit competitive in this series. If they don’t return, losing in 4/5 seems expected. If they are both back for game 1, I can see Erie getting it 6 games and at least making things interesting.

I thought someone mentioned on here before about their practice appearances but want to bring up the topic again. Does anyone know if they’ve been practicing non contact? If so and they are traveling but then don’t play, it tells me Schaefer is intentionally sitting out due to draft. While I understand it, that would be a bit disappointing

Terrance went from a non contact red jersey to a regular practice jersey. As far as I know, Schaefer has yet to practice with the team. I just saw him doing drills with the coaches.

Might be our new coach hiring. Only thing I could think of.
I don’t think at this point Schaefer will be back for the playoffs at all. Terrance has been full contact since pretty much the start of RD1 and if Schaefer hasn’t even practiced with the team as stated, I don’t think he’ll play. However, I think and would honestly expect Terrance to be back for G1. This series is unpredictable to me. If we steal one of games 1 and 2 on the road to start off the series we will put up a fight, and we always seem to have another energy level against London. The boys will definitely need the crowd behind them at home. Do the same thing we did against Saginaw in stopping their top line, which will unfortunately be a lot harder than it was against Saginaw.

Does anyone know how the Petes got Erie’s 2025 third round pick? It was traded to Sarnia in a pick swap today but nobody is sure how the Petes got it in the first place

According to the database, Erie still has their 3rd. It shows the Petes having Kingston and someone else's 3rd, but not Erie's.

It was given to London conditionally in exchange for Liam Gilmartin. Clearly the conditions were met. Not sure how it made its way to Peterborough though.

I noticed that too but the conditions I found were conditional on Gilmartin OA year, and he played in the US in what would've been his OA year last year so I didn't think it'd have transferred.

I was looking into it more and I noticed the London release said it was a conditional 5th, but the Erie release said it was a conditional 3rd, so I wonder if it was a 5th if he played OA, 3rd if he didn't? Not that that makes sense though because I'd have thought it'd be the other way around.

Very odd..
But man, that trade is even worse if they also lost their only 3rd this year..
so glad they got those 34pts in 55 games though!!! Great work DB

It just says a conditional 3rd round pick. Perhaps bad writing in that it doesn't state if it was Erie's 3rd round pick or just a 3rd round pick Erie had been sitting on, maybe I'm reading too much into that

Non contact for Schaefer. Maybe he could come back at some point (maybe if we make it to round 3 somehow)

Any chance Schaefer's agent is telling him not to play? He should be back from a broken collarbone by now unless it was a particularly gruesome fracture. I suppose I get it from his perspective - he's going to go #1OA, he could only hurt his draft stock by playing. Have to imagine the competitor in him wants back on the ice. Pretty unlikely he'll be returning to Erie, it's going to be NHL or NCAA I imagine. Would love to see him lead Erie to a home win against London. Tough to see a path to more than a win or two, but with Schaefer and Terrance back you never know.

I said this a week or two back .. If anyone is stopping him from playing (other than doctors ofc), it’s his agent and/or family telling him it’s not worth the risk given the position he currently finds himself in going to the draft. Tbh, I’m a bit surprised he’s being considered the closer than the rest of the field ‘consensus’ #1 considering all the time he’s missed but I guess the draft class overall is a bit down outside of a few top prospects and Schaefer does have a crazy high ceiling. If Schaefer was in like a projected 2-3 draft spot because of the injury and a chance to raise it if he plays, then it’s more likely we would see him return

As for next year, its possible he’s back after missing basically a full season. He still has room to go physically and I could see a scenario where whoever takes him wants to be patient. I don’t see where the NCAA fits into this and why people keep throwing it as an either or path with the NHL… I guess with the changing college landscape, everyone wants to be the first to predict something like this eventually happening but I think the situation needs to be a bit more unique than Schaefer finds himself in. In what world would he leave a league he both knows and a league that got him picked top 2 overall in the NHL draft?? And I don’t see a scenario where a team drafting him as high as they would then forces him to make that type of change … It just makes like no sense imo. If Schaefer is not happy with Erie (whether it be the team or even the location), then he can just demand a trade and go to whatever team he wants. But moving to the college game would be a wild, unprecedented move.
