Erie Otters 2024 - 25 Season Thread, Part I

Only way they’d be able to get Luchanko would be Hopkins which they have no interest in moving. Terrance I assume would be mainly picks and is another forward that’s pretty hard to play against I believe? Good 2 way?

Pinelli we wouldn’t have assets for, Ottawa wants a young player and we don’t have anyone to trade now- again Hopkins isn’t going there for sure for a 19 year old if he may not even for an 18 year old

Interesting
Erie's center depth is crazy. Terrance, while a good player, is 3rd on Erie's center depth chart, behind Fimis and Misiak. Terrance is way more defensively responsible than Misiak, but Misiak is has more offense and plays on a line with Hughes, who is very defensively responsible.

I could see him going for a mid-aged (18/19, someone who will be around next season), offensive forward and some picks. Then those picks traded for either another forward, or a BUG.

Terrance is ahead of Misiak on the depth chart. They occasionally play on the same line. When they do, Misiak is on the wing. They do have depth at center though.

Just heard from a scout that it’s believed the rumor is true. The scout couldn’t believe he isn’t playing today which led him to believe he’s going to Kingston.
He may well be traded, but the Otters have had players take time after the world junior's before. We'll have to wait and see.

In spite of having some depth at center, he is still a top 6 player on the team. Unsure if they can trade him, get perhaps a top 9 that is younger and turn around and get Musty. You're almost left in the same spot and it doesn't address a BUG or another defender.

In addition, rumors are Roysten or Challenger could be attached to the Musty trade if it comes to fruition. While Roysten may not be a top 6, he's most definitely a top 9.

I paid little attention to him the times Flint has played Erie this year so I’m mostly just looking at stats here but what are the odds Challenger is the next Zach Gallant?

I could definitely see why Terrance would want out. His production has been lacking much of the year and imo part of that is related to all the line juggling and moving pieces they had, often putting him with Hammond and/or Royston. Hard to be consistent with those 2. In addition, the team has underperformed all year and now with Schaefer out for at least the rest of the regular season, things are not looking great.

Personally, I hope it’s true because if it forces their hand to make a move or 2 before the deadline - that’s better than just sitting on their hands and making no moves given the current roster and draft capital.
Either way, after the last 2 games + this inevitable road loss upcoming - the season is in the toilet. Glad we have an experienced, legit head coach to maximize our team though!!! He’ll help them turn it around, right?!?

He hasn't impressed really. Granted he's buried in the 4th line his overall game speed is behind and his skating speed appears behind as well. Not saying he can't improve, but for someone his size, speed and potential (what he was drafted for), he has been pretty sub par. If the Otters deem the season a bust before the deadline I would love to see him with better players on line 2 or 3 for a bit to see if it's his line or if it's him.

Terrance was the 10th pick on a very bad team and managed 24 points in 62 games. Challenger as the 10th overall pick on a much more talented team is on pace for 2 points this season.

To be fair to Challenger, his linemates are really not OHL players imo. Messier and Phillips? Whats he going to do with that? Really not much talent he’s working with and the coaching staff in general has not developed much of anything the last few years. All their talent is sort of obvious, can’t miss prospects in Schaefer / Spence, guys who developed elsewhere in Erliden / Hughes, or guys who are OAs and 1st round picks in Fimis / Alfano. Everyone else has been average or under performed expectations - Terrance, Frasca in particular. The coaching staff is just as much of an issue as the drafting / GM. Does Wes Wolfe get a job anywhere else in the league? Doubtful. Peroff lasted one year in GUE. And SB was always overrated… the team in Erie this year is pretty much routinely what he produced. Unless or until Erie starts paying for REAL coaches, then this is their destiny. You need to develop, you need to get more with less. No question the team would be more exciting to watch and have a few more wins with a coach like Knoblauch on the bench because imo players like Royston, Frasca, Terrance would be better developed. Frasca’s production has dropped about 15% from last year .

Anyways - rant over. Sorry folks! Really wanted this to be a more enjoyable year but it feels they are underperforming despite already spending assets on Frasca. And now it doesn’t appear they are making moves so we just are status quo? Again, given the current state of things - I think that’s a mistake… next year they are way worse off so I guess I’ll just hope Schaefer is back, Erliden is gone, and they suck enough to sell off Spence / Schaefer? That’s what I have to root for now.

Why can’t they at least pursue another ‘free’ NCAA player to at least make this team more entertaining…

And Terrance had Lowe, Saganiuk, Signoretti/Ross, Artichuk for the bottom lines on a significantly less talented team.

Challenger has not performed as a 1st round pick to date. Even if he's moved up in favor of Hammond or even Roysten I don't see him coming close to the numbers Terrance put up his rookie campaign.

We might be getting that BUG we wanted. Zach Bowen left tonight’s Petes game early due to what was thought to be a minor injury, however what happened after was a lot more than just that. He was seen talking to Petes GM Mike Oke, and proceeded to leave the arena in street clothes. He did end up coming back, but it’s weird that he just left in street clothes. Him being traded has been being talked about for a while now, but this is certainly something to look at. I am getting him possibly going to us out of this because Fronts Insider on X said “Erie/Oshawa I assume”.

To add on, he was seen shaking hands with a number guys as he was leaving. Petes Updates did say that he is confident there is no trade, though. So could go either way. He would fit 🤷‍♂️

The wild thing is .. Those players are still better than what Challenger is working with. And also, I quickly looked back at lineups from Terrance rookie year and yes, it was a worse team but because of that, he actually got activity with Bressette / Cohen / Sedore at different parts of the year. He played with better players overall.

And I’m not saying Challenger has flashed or looked great but it’s difficult to get a full picture given the situation for him. It’s been disappointing for sure though. Ideally, he would be on pace for about ~20 pts this year and he’s on pace for 2pts.. some of that is related to the players on his line, but some is also related to his play or lack of development which seems to be a common theme with our draft picks minus the obvious Schaefer / Spence top of the board picks..

Maybe we move Holomego before the deadline and 15th round pick for free with this latest NCAA commit?

Was going to say, the rumor of Terrance moving appear to he highly suspect at this point if he got the marketing bump for players to watch.

Not saying it won't happen, but you'd hope DB and the marketing department are on the same page.

So that means Musty? Also, yes the need for a BUG. By them taking Frazier I can't imagine they'd use resources on another defender especially if he turns out to be like McCall.
