Fehr wasn't going to be the fourth line center anyway, Sundqvist would have taken that role without Cullen.

It's a fair/Fehr trade, but I can't see Rutherford pulling the gun on dealing away Fehr right now. Clearing the cap space would be nice, but the fact that Dupuis will be going on LTIR makes that a bit tougher than it'd appear (the Pens want to be as close to the cap as possible on opening night to get the most of the LTIR space).

isn't part of the reason the Coyotes bought out Vermette to give flexibility for youth (ignores Vrbata signing), so not sure they would be interested in Fehr

isn't part of the reason the Coyotes bought out Vermette to give flexibility for youth (ignores Vrbata signing), so not sure they would be interested in Fehr

That's one of the reasons cited. I think the real reason is because Vermette hurt the team on the ice. He had the second most giveaways of any forward on the team(the worst was a rookie), the worst giveaway/takeaway ratio of any forward on the team(the worst was a rookie), the most minor penalties of forward on the team, and the worst penalties taken versus penalties drawn of any forward on the team. His EV pts per 60 was rotten and is offense was becoming wholly dependent on prime PP mins (which he wasn't going to be getting next season with the addition of Strome and possibly Dvorak). He had also ceased to be a contributor to a PK unit which has declined to the point of being one of the three worst in the league.

The team is supposed to be emphasizing possession. Vermette was a player who turned the puck over a lot, didn't get it back much, took way too many penalties, and didn't help a desperate PK.

Enter Eric Fehr. He draws more penalties than he takes. He has more takeaways than giveaways and he can contribute to a team in a positive way outside of the PP. Nice thing is that if Dvorak does win a job, than Fehr can slide over to 4RW and Ryan White gets demoted to 13F.

Right now the Coyotes appear poised to simply hand over NHL jobs to Strome and Dvorak by default. That's a very bad idea. They need some flexible, versatile veteran forwards that can be slotted in multiple positions on multiple lines depending on how things play out with the rookies. I want to be prepared for a world where Strome and/or Dvorak prove they aren't ready to be NHL regulars and/or aren't ready to be NHL centers and have to move to the wing. Assuming two kids with zero NHL GP will waltz in and grab two top-nine NHL center spots is a naive recipe for disaster.

Sundqvist is probably heading to the minors, so there will be a spot for Fehr with Cullen.

LW is the weak spot for the Pens and Kunitz is the guy to dump to clear room for an upgrade.

I haven't considered the roster/cap ramifications for Pittsburgh. But any interest in throwing Klas Dahlbeck in there too? Seems like Luke Schenn pushes him to the fringes of the lineup, the Pens never replaced their generally mistake free, low maintenance RHS d-man that they lost in Lovejoy. Dahlbeck would be a fine 6/7 to have. If there needs to be some "value penalty" for this, we could defer the 3rd to 2018?

Confused why that'd be? I could be mistaken, but I don't think proximity to the cap has any impact on how much relief you get for LTIR.

Basic Formula Example
The league upper limit is $69M. A team has an averaged club salary of $68M and a player with a cap hit of $5M becomes injured and the team places him on LTIR. The team is now permitted to spend up to a new limit of $72M:

Cap hit of LTIR player is $5M
Amount of cap space available to team = $69M - $68M = $1M
Amount team can exceed the cap = $5M - $1M = $4M
New limit = $68M + $4M = $72M

Wasting away
Not judging but honestly wondering why is it such a problem to have the fourth line be...

Martinook - White - Cunningham

when Hanzal gets injured. Versus

Martinook - Fehr - White

Is that really going to be the difference maker for this team to keep it's head above water? What's the point?

The trading Fehr stuff just will not go away. It's not a need. It's not happening. Zero reason to do this

I'd be open to trading Fehr, but unless we add a roster upgrade or the kids play so well that he becomes expendable, his versatility is too valuable to move him now.

It's not worth a 3rd to lose that dependable depth.

I'd much rather keep Fehr. Kunitz and fleury will be gone soon, there's over 9 million in cap space freed up.

Fehr is a really solid bottom 6 player, I'd like to see him stay on the Pens for the year. Depth is what helped them win the cup
