GWT: EPL - Matchweek 31

Hojlund gets no service because his positional sense is sub-zero. He’s close to a Haaland-level finisher, but he doesn’t have 1/100 of Haaland’s extraordinary sense of where to be to receive balls for chances. I’m sick of the “he’s starved for service” excuse for Hojlund.
It's literally backed by stats. He's wasted so many runs this season, only to never see the ball.

When he initially came on he looked explosive and bursting with energy now I hardly notice he’s even playing. I’m willing to bet he’d do well elsewhere. Possibly Arsenal or Liverpool lol
We'll stick to other targets ;)

Definitely agree that his positioning is awful. You can only go so many games with like 10 total touches and blame it on service level. At some point, you have to make yourself available to receive the ball more and get into good/dangerous areas.

Is he close to a Haaland-level finisher? Because I surely haven't seen that from him.

His xG/shot has been consistently bonkers. When he receives the ball in shooting position, he’s close to unparalleled. He’s just never in shooting position.

Maybe his runs are trash?
This. I wrote a long post a few months ago going through the stats and my interpretation. If anyone wants to find it they’re welcome to.

Halaand level sounds hyperbolic but haaland barely touches the ball. Just give it to him in the box and he’s lights out. Probably the best finisher I’ve seen.

Yeah, Höjlund just doesn't get that kind of service. It has shown as clear frustration on him. He's bottom on stats "forwards played ball to". And I think touches in the box.

Would love to see him in a system where he has more freedom to move. Dortmund Haaland was a much more dynamic player that Pep has neutered a bit. You have this physical beast of a player with a high work rate and field sense and you keep him stuck up top waiting for the ball all game. But there's also few strikers that could do what he does when gets thise chances

Probably because his passing isn’t good enough for a pep team

Slot's insistence on not starting Chiesa is baffling. The only probably explanation I can find is that he probably called him a bald fraud in Italian during a training session or something. FSG's lack of willingness to invest in the squad properly instead plugging the holes in the squad with cork will be the end of Liverpool's "dynasty". You think the breakdown during their title defense season would have taught them a lesson but it seems to have no at all. Lets not get me started on Virgil's insistence on Elbowing people in the head and yet not get cautioned all season yet.

Also this has to one of the most boring Manchester Derbies I have ever seen.

So there is a very clear delineation in the LFC squad of the players that have legs left and those that don’t.

Konate came back early from injury, has been playing on painkillers, got hurt again on international duty, and has looked like last years version again. I’d be putting Quansah back in sooner than later, even if it’s just for a game; but Ibou does not look right. I think Konate is getting sold this summer anyway and we might just be trying to squeeze every last minute out of him; which would be great if he didn’t look absolutely cooked. Virgil looking a bit jaded too but not as bad as Konate

Midfield looks gassed out as well. Pretty sure all three of the starters have played up there with most minutes in their careers; especially Gravenberch, and they look it. Think all three of them will have gone 90 min at least 40 times this season. But this is what happens when you only trust four midfielders to play three spots and you do nothing about it. Also, maybe buying at least one defender since 2021 would have been nice.

Up top, Gakpo was better than he had been since coming back from his injury but it’s not saying much. Right now, the big problem up front is Salah and Diogo Jota cannot play with each other. Diogo lost a step since his injuries and now the two of them look completely incompatible. Darwin is brain dead out there but at least he makes space for Salah. Salah has not been good since Ramadan, but coincidentally that’s when Slot decided to be hell bent on getting Diogo going. The bigger issue is going to be this summer when we have to buy a forward. Diogo is the closest thing to what Slot wants from that position but does that jive with Salah? Especially if Salah going to extend and be the top earner? Can’t have him be incompatible with whomever the 9 replacement is. Yeah I think Chiesa should be getting more burn; but I also don’t think Slot is going to change his mind on him this late in the season either

Then hell happened to Leicester how did they get so bad so fast?
This season? Sacked Cooper when he was getting results he probably shouldn’t have been with a terrible squad. They might be in a real battle with Wolves if they kept him

In general? Covid hit their owner’s other business hard affecting their ability to spend. Schmeichel left and that created a leadership void. They had a nightmare start like Wolves in 22-23 but recovered enough to not sack their manager fast enough. Happened to be bad the year all 3 promoted teams were good enough to stay up and Everton has that relegation avoidance magic. Relegation is really tough on a club and the gap between Premier League and Championship sides is widening. That and Vardy is 38 and on borrowed time

Edit: Outside the Sky 6, 1-2 bad windows can be the difference between comfortably safe in a bad year and mid table to flirting with Europe in a good one and utter disaster

This Cheshire derby has been brutal.
Pep and City are so dreadful and such a brutal watch this entire season. (hell, even before when they were 'good / healthy') they are so slow and boring. Which, I mean... when you have to play 50+ or whatever most of the players play... all year long now for how many years in a row ... it just can not continue. Maybe that is why pep has people standing around playing keep away, because its just not possible to play fast n feverish football for 50+ matches with no summer / away from the game.

Have to fully recycle an entire squad every 5 years or so.... after that their legs will be cooked sooner than later and at least bring in a profit to find new players / youth / academy.

Pep was more than sleeping on the job.... but even him, like the players, is getting older and complacent and his brain isn't as fast and smart as he once was.

Time for everyone to go. Pep is not to see future success at city.
