WBS postgame thoughts
- obviously shambolic first half hour, caused largely by a total inability to move the ball in anything resembling an organized fashion. Colwill and Badiashile cannot play together, the two left-footer imbalance is too bad. But even playing on his proper side, Badiashile couldn't complete a 5-yard pass. I don't understand why Tosin didn't start today.
- major cause both of our inability to move the ball in the first half hour and our inability to create chances in the last hour? Enzo was played way too far forward! I get Maresca's thinking, no Cole so move your most creative midfielder up into the 10 and hope it works. But Enzo is like Cesc. He's far more creative from those mid-deep in-between spaces, with bursts forward being more carefully timed. Enzo being too far forward meant that we lost our best ball mover in the middle third, which played a big part in our sloppiness in the first section, and it meant that he didn't get the touches to really create chances in the latter part of the game. Enzo has quietly been our best player over the last ~2 months, and I think played deeper he could've really put an imprint on this one. Instead he was receiving a lot high up the pitch with back to goal, which was strange.
- Fofana a total mess at right back. Hoping for a fully fit Gusto and Lavia after the NT break, which means that James can go back to right back with Gusto deputizing. We have badly badly missed Fofana in his absence, but he was a disaster today. Hope to have him and Colwill playing together at centre back after the break. A big part of our struggles in January and February were attributable to a lot of chop and change at the back - it's not a coincidence that Colwill's season cratered when he had a new partner every week.
- why does Sanchez always go out with an open palm
- Caicedo very, very good. As per usual. As is to be expected at this point. Thought he was the best player on either side.
- this had high potential to turn into a total disaster and I will say I was impressed by the reaction to the goal. It helped that Arsenal were clearly content to sit back, but we've had multiple games this season where one setback snowballs, and a derby is a perfect storm for that. So I'm pleased with that. It is a genuine upside.
