Epic Calder Race 2024-25

Pretty much. And he's a d-man. Celebrini is a freaking centerman. He should be many more points ahead of him even if they were of equal performance. How does so many people skip over that?

Right now, it's Hutson and then Wolf and Celebrini.
At this point, because he's kept up a torrid pace and because Celebrini is just "plodding along" at 0.9ppg, I think Hutson is now the front runner.

That said, it has been said time and time again... Celebrini missed 12 of the first 13 games. He has a much higher PPG than the others. There are many reasons to be amazed at Hutson's season but the stat that he's 6th or whatever in PP points and Celebrini is "70th" or whatever he is, is not a good comparison stat. 18 year old centermen don't typically score 0.9ppg as their team's 1C and also play a responsible 2 way game. What Celebrini is doing is also very special. Same can be said of Wolf.

...tbh, anyone "bashing" any of them is just being silly; they all have had spectacular rookie seasons and any of them can win it deservedly... :thumbu:

Having 0.10 ppg more than a dman is nothing to write home about.

Top forwards usually have 0.3 to 0.6 ppg more than the top defenders. Look it up. MacKinnon is at 1.51, Makar is at 1.15. +0.36 ppg for the top forward. Year Karlsson got 100+ pts, he was 0.50+ ppg behind McDavid.

Case in point, tonight Hutson tied Hughes for 14th most points as a rookie dman. He's on pace to finish close to top 5 ALL-TIME. Might break the rookie dman assist record.

Hutson is 6 ES pts away from being top 5 all-time for a rookie D.

Hutson's two-way game is extremely underrated. +8 at 5v5 in his last 46 games.

He’s 6th in total points. In PP points, he’s 4th.

Ah, but what about having 0.1ppg more than the best rookie the NHL has ever seen, who might win the Norris?

Yes, but not at age 18, as the 1C on the worst team in the league.
MacKinnon is at 1.51, Makar is at 1.15. +0.36 ppg for the top forward.
Using a Hart trophy candidate to make your point is not making a very strong point.
Year Karlsson got 100+ pts, he was 0.50+ ppg behind McDavid.
Using one of the top 5 players of all time to make your point is not making a very strong point.

Yes! As I said - amazing year for Hutson! Probably the front runner, probably the winner! You just can't help shitting on Celebrini while eating Hutson though, and that's unnecessary.

Amazing. God love him.

Celebrini is leading the Sharks in points as an 18 year old with 1C responsibilities. Also performing at an almost PPG on one of the worst teams in the past two decades with little to no help from the backend/defensive side makes that a little tough. Jake Walamn had 13 points in 28 GP since December. Next highest scoring Dmen for the Sharks is Ferraro/Liljegren, both with 13 points.

That still won't make him the Calder winner. Do you really think voters will go into intricate analysis when they'll see hockey tweets saying Hutson finished top 5 in points among all-time rookie dmen? Ffs, they voted for Bedard and his abysmal -44 last year.

Get this, in terms of prorated and adjusted points, the all-time top 3 rookie dmen are 1-Makar 2-Hutson 3-Hughes. He's having a historical rookie season. No convoluted narrative is going to beat the milestones Hutson will quite probably reach.

What Celebrini is doing is impressive, but the only defensemen in recent history to rival what Hutson is doing this year are Makar and Hughes. He's starting to really assert his lead - people keep blindly citing odds without realizing that it's Vegas' way of creating action on everyone so that they don't have a massive liability one way or the other (And even those odds have started to shift towards Hutson with Celebrini becoming a smaller favorite day-by-day).

Your first 2 bullet points make no sense. Every team in the nhl would be happy to have Hutson in their top 4 and pp1. He isn't playing there just because theres no one better on the habs. He deserves that role with his play. He was also used on pp2 for the first 20 games.

Point number one tells you everything you need to know about his knowledge of the subject.

Hutson had to unseat Mike Matheson for that power play spot. Matheson was 9th in scoring among all defenseman last season. The guy doesn't have a clue.

I don't have a pony in this race as a Sabres fan.

The award goes to Lane Hutson.

He reads the game so damn fast that he overcomes an physical shortcoming he is percieved to have.

No knock on Celebrini, but Hutson's hockey IQ - especially considering he's a rookie defenseman, do it from my perspective. Hell, he reads the game better than most veteran defensemen.

He uses his size to a cerebral advantage, and it shows.

It's 2025 and people are still using +/- Anyway whoever wins the Calder I wouldn't trade Celebrini for
I'm thrilled with Hutson, but I agree with you – if Celebrini or Wolf played for my team, I wouldn't trade them either. They're terrific young players. What's amazing about this year's top Calder candidates is that it's become a debate over the relative value of the three key positions – Goalie, Defence, and Center. No way for any of the three teams to lose.
